It's not always easy for viewers to keep track of the twists and turns in Stranger Things, so one can imagine that it could be a little confusing for the writers, as well - if not more so! In order to keep a show going, there has to be enough new or exciting material added to keep viewers interested. The satisfaction that comes with resolution isn't possible without a little sturring of the pot, after all.

However, in the process of complicating a plot point, writers risk making the show vulnerable to plot holes, or simply going against a previously established norm. As much as Stranger Things tries to stay consistent with the rules of the world that they've created, there are still times where viewers are left feeling like some choices of the show don't make much sense.

Dustin Keeping Dart

Dustin, Stranger Things

After all the strife that the group has been through, due to strange creatures appearing in their town, it's mind-blowing that Dustin would harbor a mysterious creature in his own home while knowing that his friends think it could be dangerous.

Will nearly died because of the Demogorgon, and Dustin refusing to put his friends' safety first goes against the nature of the character fans have come to know.

Heating The Mind Flayer Out Of Will

Hopper Will stranger things

The very reason that the scientists are unable to eliminate the virus of The Upside-down is because they are tasked with keeping Will alive, who would allegedly die if exposed to extreme heat. Joyce later has an apparent epiphany when she considers that if only they expose Will's body to heat, maybe the Mind Flayer will leave his body.

The difference in procedures seems to be that Joyce proposes only mild heat, not full-on fire, but the concept being so similar feels odd when it's made out to be a brilliant idea.

Eleven Not Contacting Mike

Hopper and Eleven eating a meal together

Eleven spends a year without contacting Mike, purely because Hopper tells her not to. This would make more sense if it weren't for the fact that everything else about Eleven's behavior in the season shows that she has little problem with defying Hopper's rules, and yet this is the one she chooses to follow, keeping her from the person she cares for most.

Joking After Bob's Death

Sean Astin as Bob Newby in Stranger Things Season 2

Bob's gruesome death scene hardly left the screen when Dustin is already playfully making comments about a clever name he has thought of for the creatures that caused Bob's death, tearing him apart limb from limb in possibly the most horror-movie instance of the show up to that point. It's poorly timed humor and feels unlikely in such a heavy moment.

Failing To Ask Eleven For Help

Stranger Things season 2 Steve holding a dead demodog

All of the major issues that occur in the lab leading up to Bob's death could have been avoided if the group had thought to appeal to Eleven for help.

They know from experience that Eleven can pick up on their messages if they attempt to reach her through radio, but not once do they think of trying this, instead, relying on their own feeble attempts to beat the Demodogs when Eleven's massive powers could easily conquer them.

Becky's Phone Call

Becky, stranger things

Becky means well when she attempts to reach out to Hopper, following up on his and Joyce's previous request relating to Eleven. However, making this phone call after meeting Eleven and knowing how paranoid she must be is such a blatantly unwise move that it's shocking.

She is surrounded by two people who, for all she knows, can essentially read her mind, and yet she finds it wise to make decisions regarding Eleven's well-being behind her back.

Dr. Brenner's Replacement

Dr. Owens, Stranger Things

Viewers must assume that Dr. Brenner is absent from season two because he did such a terrible cover-up of Will's death that he was replaced.

Dr. Owens, it seems, is meant to clean up the mess that Dr. Brenner made, but even if this explanation is digestible, it's a bit of a break in what season one set viewers up to expect. Season one ended with a more darkly oppressive relationship between the lab and the residents, and there is little to no transition from this.

Hopper Exploring Alone

Stranger Things season 2 Hopper

Hopper knows the dangers of what The Upside-down and any other lab-related things can lead to, and yet, when he suspects something fishy is going on related to the lab, he goes off on his own, telling nobody exactly where he is going.

This puts not only him in danger, but the rest of the town, because any information he might gather in order to keep the town safe would die with him, and nearly does.

Eleven Running Away

Hopper and Eleven out in the woods in Stranger Things

Eleven proves herself to be a rebellious, difficult teenager in season two, but this could hardly compare to the lessons she learned from hiding from Papa or Dr. Brenner in the first season.

All of this attention to safety goes out the window when she chooses to leave Hopper's cabin and almost instantly allows herself to be seen by a local of the town, putting herself in danger and forsaking all Hopper has done for her.

Will's Map

Will's Map, Byers' House

Of all the mind-boggling things in season two, the most far-fetched might be Will's map. The map is a satisfying plot tool and transforms the Byers house into a similarly creative arena as seen with Joyce's Christmas lights in season one. The big difference is that Joyce's lights relied on the viewer's faith in the sci-fi magic of the show, where the map partially relies on logic very much of our world - which is where it fails.

If one looks at the hundreds of pictures Will produces, they all look almost identical, and yet somehow the group is able to piece them together like a puzzle.
