Eddie Munson has garnered some of the most passionate fans in the entire Stranger Things fanbase, which is saying something given how intense the series' fans have always been since the Netflix series first premiered in 2016. Twitter alone is constantly full of trending topics about his character, with fans expressing hope that he will be able to come back in some way in the final season.

These passionate fans have analyzed practically every bit of content related to Eddie in the two and a half months since season 4 first began, but there are some details that only the most die-hard of fans can truly claim that they know.

The Duffers Had Two Very Different Real-Life Inspirations For Eddie

During promotion of Stranger Things 4, the Duffer Brothers have openly discussed their desire ot incorporate a storyline inspired by the satanic panic of the 1980s that came about as a result of the rise in popularity of Dungeons & Dragons. In an interview with Netflix's Tudum, Ross Duffer stated that they took a lot of inspiration for Eddie from "the Paradise Lost documentary series with the [West] Memphis Three."

But there was another surprising inspiration for Eddie early on, or at least in the conception of the introductory scene in the cafeteria in episode one. As Matt Duffer explained it, "Originally, we were talking about, 'What was [Quentin] Tarantino like in high school?' Because he's got that sort of charisma, the magnetism, the hyper energy."

One Of His Tattoos Foreshadowed His Epic Guitar Solo

Eddie had many iconic moments as a character, but few of them could beat the scene-stealing performance of Metallica's "Master of Puppets" in the season 4 finale. Even though fans may have been prepared for this moment due to teaser trailers, it turns out there was an earlier indicator for this song choice.

As confirmed by makeup artist Amy L. Forsythe, Eddie's most prominent tattoo, located on his right forearm, is of a character they conceived of as "The Puppetmaster," a disembodied ghoulish hand puppeteering a monster on strings.

His Final Words Were Improvised By Joseph Quinn

From the very beginning of the series, Stranger Things hasn't shied away from killing off beloved characters, resulting in many heartbreaking character deaths over the seasons. Eddie's may have been the saddest of them all so far, but one behind-the-scenes detail makes it even more heartbreaking.

As Eddie lay dying and bloodied in Dustin's arms, he used his final words to weakly state "I love you, man" to his good friend. According to the official Stranger Things writers Twitter account, those final words were improvised by Joseph Quinn.

His Dio Vest Features Original Items From Ronnie James Dio's Estate

There have been many iconic costumes in Stranger Things, but Eddie Munson's signature outfit is likely one that will undoubtedly get cosplayed for years to come. It was a fairly simple outfit in some ways, only consisting of pants, a shirt, a vest, and a jacket, but the effort that went into producing the period-accurate, metalhead-approved outfit was more than worth it.

Most impressively, Eddie's outfit featured an original piece from actual heavy metal royalty. Costume designer Amy Parris revealed that, for Eddie's denim Dio vest, they "reached out to the estate [of the late Ronnie James Dio to source a band shirt]. His wife is in charge of his estate and offered to send us vintage T-shirts, which was such a dream."

The Duffers Wish They Had Developed His Relationship With Chrissy More

Many fans of Stranger Things have flocked to the potential romantic relationship between Eddie and cheerleader Chrissy Cunningham. The unlikely duo shared one of the season's most (and most adorable) moments in the first episode, where they opened up to one another and let down their guard for the first time in the series.

The chemistry between these two characters was so undeniable that even the Duffers regret killing Chrissy off so soon. As Matt Duffer told TVLine, “We always have those moments [of ‘What have we done?’] ... The scene came alive in a way that was just so beautiful. And so much of that was Joe [Quinn] and Grace [Van Dien, who portrayed Chrissy]."

Another Piece Of His Costume Likely Has Heavy Metal Roots

There were many distinctive parts of Eddie's iconic season 4 outfit, from his modified jacket sleeves including a chain to his handcuff belt buckle. But one detail that served as a true testament to his heavy metal fandom was the inclusion of a black, skull-patterned bandana in his pocket.

Eddie later wore the bandana on his head in the Upside Down sequences, but including the bandana in his pocket was most likely a tribute to heavy metal legends like Metallica's James Hetfield, who has often worn a patterned handkerchief in the same way.

Eddie Munson and the Hellfire Club in Stranger Things Season 4

As the Dungeon Master of the Hellfire Club, Eddie clearly had a lot of responsibility in preparing every campaign for his friends and fellow D&D fanatics. He took it all very seriously, as evidenced by his dramatic reaction when Dustin and Mike tried to get him to move the date of their next campaign.

But a behind-the-scenes video that focused on "Directing ST4 with the Duffer Brothers" included glimpses of a different side of Eddie's work. Multiple shots revealed intricately drawn D&D character sheets in his binder, and a wood burning of the Hellfire Club logo was also featured in their depiction of Eddie's setup, revealing that he was an artist who took his game and his craft seriously.

His Tattoos Were Likely Done By A Trailer Park Artist

Eddie's self-proclaimed "sweet old tatties" have been a major point of fixation for his dedicated fans, who have sought to analyze all the potential meaning behind each intricate, fantasy-inspired design. But something that fans may not have considered as thoroughly is where, exactly, Eddie had his tattoos done.

Makeup artist Amy L. Forsythe had her own answer for this mystery in her series of Instagram posts detailing Eddie's intricate tattoo designs, referring to them as "Bad line work and ink drop out from getting tattoos done by the trailer park 'kitchen scratcher.'"

Another Emotional Moment With Dustin Was Improvised

Eddie Munson embraces Dustin Henderson in a field in Stranger Things

The friendship between Dustin and Eddie was one of the highlights of season 4, outshining even the popular bromance between Dustin and Steve in the process. In episode eight, Eddie shared a quiet moment with Dustin in the field where he implored him to "never change."

This quietly affectionate scene was, as Joseph Quinn told 1883 Magazine, "beautifully written," but it turns out that Quinn and Gaten Matarazzo were to thank for "lean[ing] into the fraternal aspect of love," because "guys, when they're expressing love, tend to be quite physical." And so the adorable play fighting sequence between the two was created.

Eddie Learned "Master Of Puppets" In Less Than Three Weeks

Stranger Things Eddie Rock and Roll Upside Down

The "Master of Puppets" scene at the end of season 4 was already an incredibly impressive moment, made all the more amazing by the fact that Joseph Quinn was actually playing the guitar during it. But the jaw-dropping solo was, in fact, even more, incredible than most fans realized.

The events of season 4 are confirmed to have taken place between March 21 and March 27 in 1986. The Master of Puppets album was released on March 3, 1986, meaning that Eddie learned to play the song to perfection in less than three weeks. No one can try to question Eddie's metalhead status ever again.
