The Duffer brothers tease a Stranger Things spinoff with a very different concept from the original series. In 2016, the sci-fi horror show created by Matt and Ross Duffer premiered on Netflix and became an instant pop culture sensation. Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder and David Harbour alongside a young cast who became international stars after the show's release. The cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, and Joe Keery.

Set in rural Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s, Stranger Things follows a group of friends and their families as they grapple with a supernatural threat from the Upside Down with the help of Eleven (Brown), a girl with powerful abilities. Since it first began, Stranger Things has only gotten bigger and bigger, and the long-awaited season 4 promises to be the largest one yet. It's fitting that the paranormal drama is reaching new heights, as the already-ordered Stranger Things season 5 will also be its last.

In preparation for the release of Stranger Things season 4, volume 1 this week, the Duffers have opened up to Variety about their hit show. The Duffer brothers reveal that they do have an idea for a spinoff after Stranger Things is finished, but it won't be anything like the original series. The show's creators explain that while they have not written anything for the planned spinoff, it will surprise everyone - except Wolfhard, who has already guessed the idea on his own. Check out the Duffer brothers' full comment below:

“We do have an idea for a spinoff that we’re super excited about … but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it. We think everyone — including Netflix — will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it’s very, very different. But somehow Finn Wolfhard — who is one crazy smart kid — correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”

Stranger Things Season 4

It will be interesting to see what the Duffer brothers mean by "very, very different" since Stranger Things season 4 already seems to be a change from the show's first three seasons. Not only has the party been split with Eleven, Will (Schnapp), Jonathan (Heaton), and Joyce (Ryder) moving to California, but they will face a new villain from the Upside Down. The season itself will also be longer, with some episodes reaching over two hours. Considering all these changes the Duffers are making to Stranger Things, the possibilities for a spinoff could be endless.

The Duffer brothers seem very excited by their Stranger Things spinoff idea, but there is a possibility fans will never see the current plan. After season 4 releases this year, the showrunner duo still has to finish Stranger Things season 5, which will conclude the story of Eleven and Hawkins. As they develop that final season, they could find themselves branching off into other storytelling directions. Still, while the Duffer brothers' plan may change, it seems certain they have more Stranger Things stories to tell.
