Matt and Ross Duffer recently explained that Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) would finally be a major focus of the story in Stranger Things season 5. Six months after the events of the Battle of Starcourt in season 3, which saw the Hawkins, Indiana teenagers defeat the terrifying Mind Flayer, another entity from the alternate dimension known as the Upside Down begins killing people. However, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the Byers family find themselves relocated to California in an attempt to live an everyday life.

Although Stranger Things season 4 was epic in scope, fans have shared their complaints regarding both Will and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) characters being relatively sidelined. After Eleven is whisked away to a secret government facility, Will, Jonathan, Argyle (Eduardo Franco), and Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) spend most of the season in a pizza van as they travel across the country. However, certain crucial aspects of Will's character are revealed, including his sexual orientation and probable romantic love for Mike.

Duffer brothers revealed to Collider that Will's story will play a significant part in Stranger Things season 5. Matt shared that season 4 only saw the beginning of Will's coming-of-age tale and that the show's final season will cover the next steps in his personal journey. Ross also teased that season 5 will complete narrative threads that began in season 1. Read what the show's creator's said below.

Matt: "Will's going to be a big part and focus, is really all I can say of Season 5, in his journey. We're starting to see his coming of age, really. Which has been challenging for a number of reasons, some of which are supernatural. But you're starting to see him come into his own."

Ross: "[It's] setting up us coming full circle back to Season 1. I think you'll see that with a couple of the character arcs, not just with Will. But also with Steve and Nancy, and her relationship with Jonathan where things are not fully resolved. The characters have maybe made steps, like in the case of Will, but that journey isn't over yet. All of that is going to play a huge role as we try to wrap this thing up next season."

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 Will Byers Crying Gay

The Duffer brothers' Stranger Things season 5 revelation gives hope to those fans who wished that Will had more time to shine in season 4. With Will's sexuality on display, no direct discussions about his feelings left much more on the table to explore when Stranger Things returns. Although Will had opened up to Mike about being the heart of the group and using Mike's love for Eleven as a metaphor for his love for Mike, this was only the first step in Will's long journey.

With Will being separated by over 2,000 miles from his longtime friends, creating a support group is something that does not happen overnight. And being gay in the 1980s, with vilification during the height of the AIDS epidemic, would only put more pressure on Will to abstain from opening up to anybody about his sexual orientation. Now that Will is back in Hawkins, Stranger Things season 5 will finally give him his chance to open up as he has friends to confide in.
