Stranger Things Season 5 Set Photos Return To Hawkins Hospital (But There's No Sign Of Max)

The Duffer brothers share a Stranger Things season 5 update. With only a week to go until Stranger Things season 4 hits the small screen, the anticipation for the next chapter in the hit sci-fi show has reached fever pitch and shows little sign of stopping. Fans are clamoring to see what happens next to their favorite characters, and what horrors might spring from the upside down to terrorize Hawkins.

By the end of Stranger Things season 3, Eleven had left town with the members of the Byers family in order to escape from the trauma caused by Hawkins lab and the Mind Flayer. Relocating to California, they left behind the other members of the gang in the hopes of starting anew. It looks as if they might not get that chance however. As the trailers show that Stranger Things season 4 could be bringing the biggest fight of their lives and Eleven, Will, Mike, Dustin and Lucas will be going to war. Season 4 has been positioned as the beginning of the end, as it's confirmed Stranger Things season 5 will be the show's last. That has many wondering what's in store further down the line.

In an interview with Collider, the Duffers explained while they were writing the scripts for season 4, they also outlined the plot of the fifth and final season. They describe how, unlike in previous seasons where they were finishing the scripts as they were shooting, the pandemic gave them a break where they could write season 4 before shooting began and also plot out “all of [season] five.” They therefore describe the two as connected, saying that seasons 4 and 5 are “a piece.” Read the full quote below:

“We had all the scripts before we started shooting, so we could look at the whole thing as a whole. And we outlined all of five. So it really is four and five or like of a piece, and this was due to the six-month hiatus that we had due to the pandemic. So we don't typically have as much time. It usually feels like the train is going down the tracks and Ross and I and our writers are just throwing down track as we're going, once we're halfway through the season. And for the first time ever, we were able to look at it globally, not just season four, but season five as well.”

It is therefore safe to assume that the last two seasons of Stranger Things will be more connected than the previous three and that this year’s ‘Big Bad’, the malicious and enigmatic Vecna, could be sticking around. A more structured and complete series plan might also result in Stranger Things season 4 being the most well put-together yet, reaching the narrative heights of season 1 that the show has arguably struggled to recapture. The Duffers' comments paint a very interesting picture, and season 4 is shaping up to be highly emotional and exciting. The Stranger Things season 4 finale is a 2-hour movie, so it's going to cover a ton of ground as it sets up what's sure to be an epic ending.

Whether or not the Vecna bumps off one of the major characters remains to be seen, but the Duffer brothers are sure to have some incredible twists and turns up all four of their sleeves. For now, it's encouraging there's a definite plan in place for the final two seasons, indicating the creators have a clear endgame in mind. A case can be made some properties have fumbled their respective conclusions in recent years, so ideally the Duffer brothers' approach will work out. Unfortunately, there are Stranger Things season 4 spoilers circling around that threaten to diminish the impact of what they have in mind. But hopefully they'll deliver on the promise and potential.
