Stranger Things star Maya Hawke addresses the possibility of Eddie Munson returning for season 5. Joseph Quinn’s metalhead Munson became a fan favorite early on in Stranger Things season 4. But in the final episode he became a legend for his act of self-sacrifice set to the strains of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.”

Sadly Munson’s greatest guitar performance would be his last as he was killed while trying to defeat Vecna. And though sometimes death doesn’t stick in shows like Stranger Things, series creators The Duffer Brothers recently indicated that Eddie’s demise will be permanent, stating definitively that the character is dead. Nevertheless, fans hold out hope that somehow, some way Eddie will return for Stranger Things season 5.

On the flip-side however there is an argument that constantly bringing back dead characters is indeed not a good idea for a show like Stranger Things. This certainly seems to be the opinion of Robin actor Hawke, who told NME that though she gets why fans love Munson, she doesn’t necessarily want the character to come back to life. She said:

“I totally sympathize with fans who want to see more of him. … I feel like we can’t keep killing people and bringing them back to life – the same fans would be so annoyed! But I would love them to find a way to have Eddie’s ghost in the mix, just because Joe Quinn is such an awesome guy. He’s so much fun to have on set and such a great actor.”

Eddie Munson in Stranger Things season 4

Hawke’s “Eddie returns as a ghost” idea is in fact not a new thought, as Munson actor Quinn himself previously proposed he return for Stranger Things season 5 in supernatural form to communicate with his friend Dustin. Obviously Stranger Things has a strong supernatural element so perhaps the Ghost Eddie idea is not so crazy. Fans have also proposed that perhaps Vecna himself resurrects Eddie to be his minion, though this idea might not set well with fans who want good Eddie in Stranger Things season 5 and not evil zombie Eddie.

Hawke of course makes a valid point about how it’s not a good idea to keep teasing fans by seemingly killing characters and bringing them back. In fact, Eleven actor Millie Bobby Brown recently made a similar point when she criticized Stranger Things for not killing off any main characters, calling the Duffer Brothers "sensitive Sallies" for their unwillingness to embrace Game of Thrones levels of death. Of course it’s true that Stranger Things' stakes would seem higher if more characters died and their deaths actually stuck. But it’s also true that fans would be outraged if their favorites kept being killed off.

Stranger Things fans indeed seem particularly sensitive to death, as even minor characters like Barb continue to be mourned years after their fictional demises. At least for now, it seems fans have seen the last of Eddie Munson too, but who knows what plans lurk in the minds of the Duffer Brothers as they plot out Stranger Things season 5. Eddie may yet get a chance to top his epic season 4 Metallica solo.
