Though its return date is unknown, exciting news is coming for Stranger Things season 5 as it officially kicks off writing in a behind-the-scenes image. Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, better known as the Duffer Brothers, the Netflix series revolves around a small fictional town in Indiana during the '80s as they face a number of supernatural threats from the dangerous alternate dimension known as the Upside Down. Stranger Things primarily explores the Upside Down's connection to Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven, a a young girl with telekinetic abilities whose powers seem to tie her to the horrifying other realm.

Stranger Things season 4 saw most of its main characters having been split across the country and learning of the dangerous new threat of Vecna, an entity living in the Upside Down who is killing seemingly random teenagers across Hawkins. While Winona Ryder's Joyce and Brett Gelman's Murray learn of David Harbour's Hopper being alive and imprisoned in Russia, Eleven and her friends must face Vecna before he pulls off his ominous plan. Stranger Things season 4 scored largely favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike and has dominated Netflix's viewership, setting up a thrilling fifth and final season that viewers may not have to wait too long to see.

The announcement that Stranger Things season 5 has begun writing comes just over a month after the Duffer Brothers confirmed writing would begin sometime in August for the final season. Interestingly, it also comes just over a month after David Harbour indicated that writing had already begun on the new season and that filming on season 5 could begin in 2023. Given story outlines for the series were being drafted prior to the official start of writing, it seems likely that was what Harbour was referring to as the Duffers wanted to take a brief break before getting back to writing.

With Stranger Things season 5 now officially being written, it seems likely that Harbour's 2023 filming start production will come to fruition, especially as the final season of the show is said to be shorter than the frequently feature-length season 4. Should the Duffers and their ensemble cast follow this production schedule, audiences can look forward to seeing Stranger Things' swan song hitting Netflix sometime in 2024, putting it at a two-year gap instead of the COVID-delayed three-year gap between seasons 3 and 4. While audiences await further details on the final season, they can revisit the first four seasons of Stranger Things streaming on Netflix now.
