A new trailer for Stranger Things season 4 confirms the next season will be set in 1986 and involve a California-based storyline. Stranger Things quickly became one of Netflix's most popular titles upon its release in 2016. The show has evolved as the main cast has grown up, with season 3 focusing on Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Mike's (Finn Wolfhard) romance. Despite the characters' clear connection, the friends were split up as Eleven moved away with the Byers family following Hopper's apparent death.

While there will be plenty of mysteries in store for audiences when the series returns, marketing material for Stranger Things season 4 has already given some hints at the show's story. Hopper being alive was teased at the end of season 3, and the first Stranger Things season 4 trailer confirmed David Harbour's return. The fourth season jumps back to the '50s with a haunted house plot that includes Robert Englund playing the Creel family's patriarch, who murders his wife and two children. This is believed to play a major role in Stranger Things season 4's story, with the trailer released during Netflix's TUDUM event showing Dustin, Lucas, Nancy, Steve, Max, and Robin breaking into the abandoned Creel home.

Now a new trailer released by Netflix gives an even better look at the upcoming season. The majority of the trailer features a voice-over of Brown reading a letter Eleven wrote to Mike. The teenagers are enjoying life in California and anticipating Spring Break before the trailer cuts to a brief montage of action sequences. Fans have been eagerly awaiting more Stranger Things content since this has been the biggest gap in between seasons yet. Stranger Things season 4 started shooting in early 2020, but like so many other productions, filming halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. This allowed the writers more time to perfect the script, meaning that Stranger Things season 4 has the potential to be the best season yet. Harbour has even stated that this is his favorite season of the show so far.

Even though Eleven and Mike are separated, it's clear from this trailer that their romance will still be a huge part of season 4. With the core cast split into two groups going into season 4, California and Hawkins, Indiana will likely be equally featured before the characters finally reunite. California should be a refreshing setting for the series as well since life in California in the 1980s was dramatically different than it would have been in a small town in Indiana. This latest trailer for Stranger Things season 4 may bring more questions than answers, but it will no doubt help Netflix build hype for the show's return next year.
