Millie Bobby Brown shares that it was hard to lose some of her Stranger Things co-stars after their characters’ deaths–including Papa (Matthew Modine) and Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery). Stranger Things is a popular sci-fi Netflix series created by the Duffer Brothers. It follows a group of children\ as monsters from a supernatural world called the Upside Down begin to disrupt their lives as they grow into being teenagers. Brown stars as Eleven, a young girl who acts as the catalyst for the show’s storyline. The series aired its fourth season this past summer, and Stranger Things season 5 will be the last of the series.

Papa and Billy Hargrove are some of the show’s biggest antagonists. Papa, or Dr. Martin Brenner, is the character who kidnaps Eleven after her mom's death and prior to where the show’s storyline begins. At the end of Stranger Things season 4, Papa somewhat redeems himself but is ultimately killed off at the end of the season. Billy, the main antagonist in season 3, is Max Mayfield’s stepbrother and is very openly racist and abusive throughout his appearance in the show. However, at the end of the season, Billy also redeems himself by giving up his life to save Eleven from a monster, and apologizing to his younger sister in his final moments.

In an interview with ET, Brown admitted it was difficult for her to let go of those characters and the actors who portrayed them. The show is known for killing off characters just as they begin to show a better side of themselves – and that is particularly evident with Papa and Billy. Brown said it “sucks sometimes” to lose the relationship with characters who are killed off. Read what she said about Billy and Papa prospectively below.

"I loved Billy. I loved Dacre Montgomery, who was killed off in season 3. I had a really good relationship with him, so for me, it was really hard to let go of that.

And the same thing with Papa in this season. I had a really good relationship with Papa. I had a really good relationship with Matthew, and to let him go was really hard."

In the interview, Brown also briefly commented on fan theories for the upcoming Stranger Things season 5, saying she doesn’t know as much as people think she does about its plot. Season 5 will have to address the stressful finale of Season 4, which brought monsters from the Upside Down into Hawkins. However, in July, the Duffer brothers shared that the season might jump forward a few years. The creators also confirmed that the season will take place primarily within Hawkins – a return to the original setting for the show after it branched off to various locales (including California and Russia) in season 4.

Many theories have been introduced surrounding what Stranger Things season 5 will bring and what characters it might kill off, but there’s not much to know about the show’s upcoming season at this point. Writing reportedly commenced for Stranger Things season 5 in August, and its release will likely be in 2024 as filming doesn't begin until next year. The Duffer brothers want to “stick the landing” for Stranger Things season 5 and hopefully whatever it is, it will be worth the wait.
