Stranger Things season 4 producer Shawn Levy addresses whether Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is gay. Stranger Things season 1 first introduced Schnapp's character, Will, during which he gets abducted into an alternate dimension by a creature known as a "Demogorgon." Before his abduction, Will is a shy, artistic boy that loves playing Dungeons & Dragons with his three best friends.

After being rescued near the end of the first season, Will returns to Stranger Things season 2 with a more prominent role in the series. Due to the trauma he experienced while trying to survive in the Upside-Down, Will's friends and family are careful in how they treat him, leading to Will becoming annoyed by his loved ones supposed babying of him. While Will may be safe from the Upside-Down, he's still haunted by a creature known as the Mind Flayer, which attempts to possess him during the rest of the season. After finally defeating the Mind Flayer at the end of Stranger Things season 3, Will and his family move out of Hawkins and head to California, thrusting Will into a new setting to which he must adapt.

One of the biggest questions posed in Stranger Things season 4 is whether Will is gay or not. During an interview with EW, Levy attempted to address that very question. Explaining that there "aren't many accidents on Stranger Things," Levy says there is "clear intention" and "real thought" given to every character on the show. Therefore, Levy says it's no accident if you came away from Stranger Things season 4 picking up on specific "bread crumbs," such as Will's sexuality. View Levy's quote addressing whether Will is gay or not blew:

"Without getting into where we go later in Season 4 [Volume 2], I guess I'll just say that there aren't many accidents on Stranger Things. There is clear intention and strategy and real thought given to each and every character. So, if you came away from Volume 1 feeling those bread crumbs of plot and character, it's probably no accident."

During Stranger Things season 4, one scene, in particular, has helped spur the speculation about Will's sexuality. In episode 5, while being chased by armed soldiers, Will and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) have a heart-to-heart conversation in which Will tells Mike, "Sometimes I think it's just scary to open up like that, to say how you really feel, especially to people you care about the most because what if they don't like the truth?" Fans can read between the lines here to see that Will is talking about something beyond their current situation. As Levy explains above, there are other bread crumbs during the latest season that may point to Will's sexuality. One example is Will doing a report on Alan Turing, a WWII codebreaker charged with gross indecency for having a relationship with another man.

Stranger Things has never been shy to touch on the sexuality of its characters, such as Robin (Maya Hawke) coming out to Steve (Joe Keery) at the end of season 3. Since Levy deliberating says there are no accidents on the show, fans are picking up on Will's sexuality for a reason. Although the show has yet to confirm the rumor completely, it seems Stranger Things season 4 volume II will most likely answer the question it releases in July.
