The long-awaited fourth season of Netflix's Stranger Things may require a little more patience from fans as star Finn Wolfhard announces the season may be released in 2022. The show premiered in 2016 with its main cast members in their early teens and has had no more than a two-year gap between season releases until now. Season 3 was released in 2019 with a cast still full of kids, and so, with the now-expected 2022 release of Season 4, it seems the Duffer brothers (Stranger Things creators) will have some explaining to do with the significant jump in their cast's age.

Wolfhard stars alongside Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Milly Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Noach Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, and others in this hit sci-fi/horror series fuelled with 80s nostalgia that continues to take the world by storm. The story follows the lives of a group of kids as they uncover the dark secrets their small suburban town is hiding as they battle hideous monsters along with the corrupt leaders who are protecting (and harboring) them.

During a Fanmio video chat with fans, which was released on Twitter by Stranger Things Spoilers, Wolfhard revealed that he's not expecting Season 4 to release until "sometime" in 2022.

Season 4? It should be out sometime next year, hopefully.

David Harbour as Hopper in Stranger Things Season 3

Season 4 was officially announced in September 2019, a few months after the third season's release. Filming began in Lithuania in early 2020, but, like many other shows, Netflix put production on hold due to the pandemic. It's recently been stated that filming is expected to continue into August of this year, supporting Wolfhard's supposition. Around the time that production for Season 4 started, a teaser trailer was released, which confirmed the return of a critical character who audiences assumed to be dead (Harbour's beloved Chief Hopper). Other than this, fans don't have much to go on, but Season 4 is apparently the scariest, according to Joe Keery (who plays Steve Harrington).

Many fan theories circulate about the nature of Season 4 as the gap in filming leaves audiences to wonder if years will have passed since we last saw the middle-school-aged characters. Many questions have arisen, such as how Hopper survived the fatal explosion at the end of Season 3, which of the fan-favorite recurring characters will return, and how the Duffer brothers will manage to create an even more terrific monster. But one thing is for sure-- Stranger Things Season 4 will be bigger and better than ever.
