Metallica has responded to Eddie Munson's killer Stranger Things finale scene. The hit Netflix original series began streaming in July of 2016 and has since become Netflix's most-watched English-language television series. The first volume Stranger Things season 4 was released on May 27, 2022, and the second volume hit Netflix on July 1. Earlier this year, the show's creators (the Duffer Brothers) revealed that the next season of the series would be its last and will likely premiere sometime in 2024.

Introduced in the most recent season of the series, metalhead, guitarist, and Dungeons and Dragons lover Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) quickly became a fan favorite. In season 4's climactic finale, Eddie creates a distraction to save his friends in the Upside Down by shredding Metallica's "Master of Puppets" on his electric guitar, drawing a hoard of demonic bats towards him. While the episode has only been out for less than a week, the sequence has already gone down in Stranger Things history, with many fans considering it to be one of the most badass scenes in the entire series.

In a post on their Instagram, Metallica has commented on the use of their song in the scene, and they have nothing but positive things to say. The band begins by praising the Duffer Brothers for the way Stranger Things has incorporated music into the show throughout the series, and admit that they were incredibly excited for one of their songs to be featured. Metallica goes on to say that they were blown away by the final product of the sequence, and have been taken aback by how many fans could name their song just from seeing Quinn's hands move on the guitar frets in the episode's trailer. Check out Metallica's full comment below:

"The way The Duffer Brothers have incorporated music into Stranger Things has always been next level, so we were beyond psyched for them to not only include “Master of Puppets” in the show, but to have such a pivotal scene built around it. We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did we were totally blown away... it’s so extremely well done, so much so, that some folks were able to guess the song just by seeing a few seconds of Joseph Quinn’s hands in the trailer!! How crazy cool is that?

It’s an incredible honor to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again be keeping company with all of the other amazing artists featured in the show."

Metallica's "Master of Puppets" is not the only season 4 song to gain a massive resurgence after its use in Stranger Things. Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" has become a #1 chart hit after it was used in the series to help Max Mayfield escape from Vecna — something that the song didn't even come close to achieving with its original release in 1985. As Metallica says in their post, Stranger Things has always found unique ways to incorporate 80s music into the series, and Eddie's rendition of the song in "the most metal concert in the history of the world" may do for Metallica what the show has already done for Kate Bush.

While there were many songs that Eddie could have played in the season 4 finale, "Master of Puppets" was the perfect choice for the series, and Metallica seems to wholeheartedly agree with that. Hardcore fans — of both Stranger Things and classic rock alike — were able to pick out the song from the positioning of Quinn's hands on his guitar alone, and that speaks to the intense love surrounding the Netflix series. With one more season of Stranger Things still to come, fans can look forward to more classic 80s music, with the blessings of their original artists.
