Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 4, part 1

A post from Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp has fuelled fears that there will be some major character deaths in season 4, volume 2. Ever since Stranger Things season 4 premiered back in May, the science-fiction series has once again solidified itself as must-see TV, with viewers falling in love with both new faces and returning characters all over again. However, as Stranger Things has shifted more into the horror genre and massively raised the stakes in season 4, audiences have been growing more and more worried that their favorite character is going to meet their end before the season is out.

The Duffer Brothers recently confirmed that Stranger Things season 4 will feature deaths, but did not specific whether the "body count" would be made up of any of the show's major players. This had led Stranger Things viewers to anxiously speculate about who could die in the big finale showdown against One/Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). As the final two feature-length episodes drop on Netflix today (July 1), it will soon become clear just whose demise is coming — especially as the streamer has done nothing but fuel the paranoia in its official marketing material. Netflix recently created an ominous “Protect Steve” billboard, referring to fan-favorite character Steve Harrington (Joe Keery).

Posting a few hours before the Stranger Things season 4 finale dropped, Schnapp has now increased these fears further. The actor, who plays Will Byers on the show, was the first one to tease that volume 2 would involve major character deaths last month. Now, Schnapp has posted a picture to his Instagram story of him crying and looking distressed, with the caption “Happy Stranger Things Finale.” See the post below:

The repeated confirmation that one or more major characters is going to die – or, at the very least, that the end of Stranger Things season 4, volume 2 is going to be extremely emotional – is both exciting and nerve-wracking. With Stranger Things season 5 confirmed to be the final season, it has been widely speculated that this finale isn’t going to have a happy ending, or a neat resolution. With both a large main ensemble cast and an ultra-powerful villain in Vecna, there are many heartbreaking possibilities that Schnapp could be reacting to in his new post.

Of course, Stranger Things has killed off important characters before, such as Sean Astin’s Bob in season 2, or Alexi and Billy in season 3. However, none of those characters appeared in season 1, so the threat to characters that have been there since the beginning (including Steve and Will) is enough to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. At the very least, Schnapp is the latest to confirm that Stranger Things season 4, volume 2 is going to be an extreme emotional rollercoaster, and will likely leave more than a few viewers very unhappy.
