Stranger Things season 3, episode 3, "The Case of the Missing Lifeguard", continues to raise lots of questions about the Mind Flayer's plans. This season is moving at a faster pace than the last two, in large part because by Stranger Things season 3, episode 3, the kids are used to strange goings-on. By now, they're pretty much all as good at detective work as Nancy Drew.

The episode kicks off with Eleven playing around with her powers, and she accidentally glimpses the moment Billy turns Heather into one of the Mind Flayer's creatures. That leads Max and Eleven on a hurried - but already doomed - quest to save Heather. Meanwhile, Dustin, Steve and Robyn attempt to learn the truth about the Russians. And by the end of the episode, the rest of the kids know that the Mind Flayer is back as well. Unfortunately, for its part the Mind Flayer recognizes Eleven as a threat as well.

Only three episodes in, and everybody knows something is badly wrong at Hawkins. But what's going on at the Mall, who attacked Hopper, and just what happened to Mrs. Driscoll?

5. What Will The Mind Flayer Do Now It's Recognized Eleven?

When Stranger Things season 3, episode 3 begins, Eleven and Max have no idea that anything untoward is going on in Hawkins. As a result, they're freaked out when Eleven sees Billy at the moment he's turning Heather into one of the Mind Flayer's creatures, and they spend the rest of the episode attempting to track Billy and Heather down, struggling to understand what Eleven saw. It all culminates in a cool scene in which they confront Billy in Heather's home, and walk away confused at the fact Heather seems to be fine. The episode then focuses in on Billy, and reveals that he's recognized Eleven from the end of Stranger Things season 2. The Mind Flayer now knows the face of its threat, and if it has access to Billy's memories, it probably knows all about Max's friend as well. That bodes ill for Eleven.

4. How Can Will Sense The Mind Flayer's Presence?

It seems that Will's history with the Mind Flayer has turned him into a sort of early warning system for its presence. Will spends most of Stranger Things season 3, episode 3 trying to repress the sense that something is wrong in Hawkins, and as a result he emotionally regresses. At the end of the episode, though, Will senses the Mind Flayer too powerfully to dismiss his feelings anymore. He knows that the Mind Flayer is back.

3. What's Going On With Hawkins' Residents?

Mrs. Driscoll possessed

Meanwhile, Nancy and Jonathan's investigation into the Hawkins rats takes an insane turn in Stranger Things season 3, episode 3. They return to Mrs. Driscoll's home to retrieve the rat, but find it gone. To their horror, they discover Mrs. Driscoll herself, stood eating fertilizer. The clear implication is that Mrs. Driscoll is now possessed by the Mind Flayer as well - but why is she eating fertilizer? That wasn't part of Will's possession in season 2, so presumably something else is going on.

2. Who Attacked Hopper At Hawkins Lab?

Joyce believes that Hawkins Lab is back in business, and in Stranger Things season 3, episode 3 Hopper decides to prove her wrong. He and Joyce break into the deserted Hawkins Lab, but neither notice brand new, fully-functioning security cameras. Moments later, Hopper is attacked by a mystery figure who then flees on a motorcycle. It's unclear why he was there, or why he felt the need to attack.

1. What Are Russians Doing At The Mall?

Meanwhile, Dustin, Steve and Robyn are gradually figuring out what the Russians are doing at Starcourt Mall. It seems the Russian agents are concentrated around one specific storage room, which is under heavily armed guard. Mysterious crates are being transported to the storage room and left there. But Stranger Things season 3, episode 3 is silent on what's in the crates or why the Russians are doing this at so public a location.

Other Questions After Stranger Things Season 3, Episode 3

Hopper and Joyce argue in Stranger Things

Meanwhile, Stranger Things season 3, episode 3 raises a whole host of other curious questions. Will Hopper and Joyce ever get together? Joyce's obsession with Hawkins Lab is driving Hopper mad, but by the end of the episode he's got to admit she has a point. Did Mike just unwittingly out Will? Will is the one member of the gang who hasn't shown any interest in girls, and in a throwaway comment Mike seems to hint that he thinks his friend is gay. The conversation swiftly moves on, but it's left hanging as an intriguing possibility. And is it safe for Eleven to use the Upside Down right now? Certainly the Mind Flayer appeared to sense her presence - which may mean it can also harm her.
