The residents of Hawkins, Indiana are back and ready for a summer of fireworks in a slew of new character posters for Stranger Things season 3. Netflix first premiered sci-fi series Stranger Things back in 2016, and the show immediately became a huge hit for the streamer as well as a pop culture sensation. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s, the show featured a group of grade school friends stumbling upon a supernatural mystery involving a secretive government facility, a bizarre alternate dimension called the Upside Down, and an enigmatic young girl named Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
After hitting the jackpot with the nostalgic first season, Netflix brought back Stranger Things for a second go around in 2017, and this time the threat from inter-dimensional monsters was even bigger than before. In addition to facing even more menacing beings from the Upside Down, the Hawkins kids also found themselves dealing with the challenges of early adolescence, including the first stirrings of romance. In season 3, set to hit Netflix this summer, the biggest news in Hawkins is that the town has a new mall (which would've been a big deal back in the 1980s). But of course, monsters will soon be along to once again terrorize the otherwise sleepy community.
As Netflix gets ready to roll out Stranger Things season 3, a whole slew of new character posters have been released that give fans another look at their favorite returning characters as well as one interesting new addition to the cast. See the posters below:
"One summer can change everything," the posters proclaim, which sounds like the tagline for a coming-of-age story. Of course, there's always been a coming-of-age element to Stranger Things, but it seems that season 3 will go even further into that territory than before. In addition to all the returning characters from prior seasons, including fan favorite Erica, the posters include a new character in Maya Hawke's Robin, an "alternative" girl who works at the mall with Steve. Also included is season 2 bad guy Billy (Dacre Montgomery), who was featured in an amusing teaser video that just dropped.
Naturally the characters will have a lot more than the usual summertime action to deal with, as Hawkins continues to be a target for monsters from another dimension. After upping the ante in season 2, it'll be interesting to see how the Duffer Brothers continue to expand on the mythology of Hawkins and the Upside Down in the third season. Season 2 of course did have its detractors, with many critics venting their particular ire at the way the character of Eleven was handled. It remains to be seen if the Duffers have enough ideas left to keep Stranger Things fresh in season 3, and if they will continue to steer the characters in directions that satisfy fans.
