A new promo video for season 2 of Netflix’s Stranger Things teases a message from Eleven and the experiments she went through at Hawkins National Laboratory. The Duffer brothers’ hit sci-fi series is coming back for a second season later this month, just in time for Halloween, and is set about a year after the events of the first season.

At the end of season 1, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) sacrificed herself to save Mike, Dustin, and Lucas from the Demogorgon while Will Byers was being rescued by his mom, Joyce, and Sheriff Hopper from the Upside Down. The new season will deal with the aftermath of Will’s comeback as well as with Eleven’s whereabouts and, mostly, her backstory, as teased on a new promo video.

The video (shown above) features Eleven and a woman, with extreme close ups of their mouths, intertwined with images from Hawkins Lab, Dr. Brenner, the experiments Eleven (and quite possibly the woman as well) was subjected to, sunflowers, rainbows, young women, and the number 450 in a digital clock and a calculator. The most notable images, however, are the newspaper clippings with headlines such as “Alleged experiments, abuse”, “MKUltra Exposed”, and “Dr. Martin Brenner named in lawsuit”, all the while the woman mutters “sunflower, three to the right, four to the left, rainbow, 450” repeatedly.

Eleven’s backstory was briefly and vaguely mentioned in the first season; she is presumably the daughter of a woman named Terry Ives, who was a participant in the Project MKUltra experiments, involving psychedelic drugs and sensory deprivation. Eleven was abducted and raised by Dr. Martin Brenner at Hawkins Lab, where she was used as a test subject to develop her psychokinetic skills. The woman in the video could be Eleven’s mother, as they went through similar experiments and she is shown with her nose bleeding – just like Eleven when she overexerts her powers.

Season 2 promises to explore the “bigger mythology” of Will’s disappearance, which is heavily connected with Eleven as they have both seen the worst of the Upside Down. Plus – as seen on the trailer – she has been trapped in this dimension since her disappearance. In addition to that, the exploration of Eleven’s backstory could also shed some light on other experiments conducted by Brenner and company, who have clearly been working on these type of extreme, psychedelic experiments for a long time.
