It looks as though fans of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things will be getting more insight into sheriff Hopper’s daughter in the upcoming second season. Sheriff Hopper, who is played by actor David Harbour, was a central character in the first season of Stranger Things, but now with the second season a little less than two months away, word has arrived that the “primary focus” of the new season will, in fact, be on the sheriff’s daughter.

As dedicated viewers of Stranger Things will already know, Jim Hopper was dealing with a lot of issues when his character was introduced in the first season. Viewers gradually learned that at least one of the reasons for the painful past that he was trying to drink away was the death of his daughter. It could also be argued that the loss of his daughter made his desire to save Will (Noah Schnapp) and find Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), all the more personal as a result.

Confirmation of Stranger Things’ second season focusing on Jim Hopper’s daughter has come from Harbour himself, in an interview with TV Guide. While Harbour has revealed this bit of plot, he does maintain that the delving into sheriff Hopper’s character and somewhat tragic past isn’t going to play out in a typical, literal fashion. On the contrary, this being Stranger Things, our insight into Hopper’s past sounds as though it will be quite extensive, but perhaps unique in its own way. Said Harbour:

Sheriff Hopper and Daughter

“Hopper’s daughter will be the primary focus of Season 2, but not in the way that you think it will be. Hopper’s understanding of that relationship and Hopper’s understanding of being a father and of being a man grows deeper and deeper in Season 2, and we get a lot of time to explore what that is, but it won’t be in the literal way that you think it is.”

While he did play a central role in the first season of Stranger Things, sheriff Hopper was indeed one of the more complex characters found in the small town of Hawkins - a character whom audiences didn’t completely get to know. As with much of Stranger Things, sheriff Hopper gave the impression that there was still a great deal beneath the surface to discover. His mysterious personality and past experiences were an aspect of the series that felt unfinished. For this reason, it makes sense to discover that more information on Hopper is on its way. How exactly this will relate to and fit into the second season’s overall narrative remains to be seen.

Of course, some Stranger Things fans might be concerned that the show will focus too much on sheriff Hopper, rather than, say, the new monster from the Upside-Down and Eleven's return. However, it’s important to remember that Stranger Things has already proven itself to be a layered and complex series that can aptly juggle multiple story threads (and mysteries) at once, without dropping the ball on any of them.

One thing is for certain: the degree of anticipation for Stranger Things season 2 is so high at this point that the Duffer Brothers definitely have their work cut out for them. If the first season is any indication, exactly how the second season will go about unraveling its riddles will have fans captivated once again.
