The authorities are looking for the missing Eleven, and Mike just might know where she is, in a provocative new clip from Stranger Things season 2. The Emmy-nominated smash-hit Netflix series is set to return to the streaming service just in time for Halloween, with the promise of more supernatural sci-fi adventures inspired by the pop culture of the 1980s.
When the denizens of Hawkins were last seen, poor Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) had been rescued from The Upside Down by Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and his pals, thanks in large part to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) who seemed to sacrifice herself in order to defeat the slimy inter-dimensional Demogorgon. However, when Hopper (David Harbour) was seen leaving some Eggos in a box in the woods near the end of the season 1 finale, it seemed evident that Eleven had survived her encounter with the monster and was hiding out somewhere in the wilderness. A recent teaser clip for season 2 indeed showed Eleven escaping from the ick and slime of the Upside Down and returning to the relatively-pleasant real world.
In a new Stranger Things season 2 clip released via Netflix UK & Ireland - included above - Mike is being questioned by the authorities as to the whereabouts of Eleven, but insists he doesn't know where she is. The cops tell Mike that Eleven is a danger to his family, but Mike remains furiously loyal to his friend, saying he wouldn't give up her location even if he knew. Amid the grilling, Mike happens to glance at the window where he catches a glimpse of someone who appears to be Eleven lurking in the darkness beyond. One of the agents then notices Mike staring fixedly at the window and turns his head to get a look.
How will season 2 handle Eleven and her reintroduction to her old friends? From the clip above, it's clear that Eleven is being hunted when the season begins, which is not a surprise given her powers. Among other things, season 2 is expected to delve more deeply into the telekinetic Eleven's mysterious backstory, including who her parents are and how she ended up in the research lab. There are also lingering questions about Hopper's connection to Eleven after that glimpse of him leaving Eggo out for her at the end of season 1.
The spooky image of Eleven seeming to gaze through the window at Mike - assuming that really is Eleven, and not just Mike imagining things - is evocative of the conflict developing at the heart of her character. On the one hand, El longs to be a normal kid, have a family and friends and go to school. On the other hand, Eleven realizes that her powers make her dangerous, so as much as she might wish to come out of hiding and be with her friends again, she must stay hidden for their protection as much as her own.
That said, with new monsters emerging in Stranger Things season 2 - and Will Byers himself possibly experiencing dangerous after-effects of his experiences in the Upside Down - Eleven may soon have no choice but to come out of hiding and once again use her powers to save her friends.
Stranger Things season 2 arrives October 27 on Netflix.
