With the arrival of Stranger Things season 2 imminent, Netflix has launched a new mobile game to let fans experience the horrors of Hawkins. As Halloween approaches, so too do new episodes of Stranger Things. After the events of last season, the status quo has changed, and a big new monster is on the way. Promotion has also been in full swing for the show, with promos and posters arriving at a steady clip.

Ahead of the release of the upcoming season of Stranger Things, we've seen a glimpse of the new and returning characters thanks to new images from the show. Though not much has been revealed about the plot of the episodes, we know a few things. For one, Barb's parents will arrive as part of the show's commitment to giving the character justice. We'll also see a lot more references to the '80s, something that's at the forefront of a novel new piece of marketing.

A new Stranger Things mobile game has been added to the Apple and Google app stores, allowing fans to take control of their favorite characters and explore the mysteries of Hawkins. You can check out the short trailer for the game below:

Operating like many a '80s adventure games, Stranger Things: The Game evokes the style of classics like The Legend of Zelda as players travel through dungeons looking for items. Collectibles include Eggos, naturally, and various settings from the show are all on display. Things even shift into the Upside Down at times. Each character also has special abilities, like Lucas' wrist rocket or Nancy's baseball bat collection.

For now, it looks like the game will focus on the first season of the show. That said, it's not hard to imagine future updates including the second season's Lovecraftian monster or the mysterious new location the show will open in. Of course, the free game may also just be a one-off way of promoting the new season. Either way, it's a fun and effective way to evoke the mood of the show while paying homage to their shared roots.

Stranger Things already walks a line that could easily dip into parody when it comes to its reverence for '80s fare. While the first season effectively navigated those waters, we still have a few more weeks to decide whether the Duffer Brothers will be successful the second time around.
