A new Stranger Things novel is coming and it will reveal Jim Hopper's origin story. Hopper's life before Hawkins is mainly a mystery, but now viewers will have a chance to learn more about the beloved character played by actor David Harbour.

What is known is that before arriving in the sleepy town of Hawkins and becoming chief of police, Hopper was married with a daughter named Sara. Yet, as we learn in Stranger Things, Hopper and his wife tragically lose their daughter. And that story may just be what gets revealed in this new prequel novel since it's said the book will unearth some "long-buried secrets" from Hopper's past.

Titled Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town, the novel set to hit shelves on June 4th, exactly one month before the release of Stranger Things season 3. It is the second in a series of prequel novels that serve as a tie-in to the events of the Netflix-hit series and will focus on Hopper's life as a New York City homicide detective in 1977. The author of the canonical prequel novel, Adam Christopher confirmed the news on his official blog:

"This was a dream project and the book was a joy to write – I’m a huge fan of the show, and Hawkins police chief Jim Hopper is my favourite character. Digging into his past in NYC was a real blast, and I hope readers have as much fun reading about his bizarre 1977 adventure as I did writing it."

Netflix has also revealed (via Twitter) that Eleven is the one who pushes Hopper into unearthing some of his past secrets. The pair has obviously bonded over the course of her life in Hawkins considering she is now his adopted daughter. Hopper and Eleven each endured tragic pasts and it makes sense why Eleven would want to know more about Hopper pre-Hawkins.

The first Stranger Things prequel novelStranger Things: Suspicious Minds, hit shelves on February 5th. It dives deeper into Eleven's backstory, and more specifically the life of her mother, Terry Ives, in the late '60s. The novel also reveals more details regarding Dr. Brenner and the MKUltra project that heavily altered Eleven's life in the future. The tie-in prequels are Netflix's latest efforts to expand the Stranger Things universe, having recently debuted a comic book series. There were also plans for a Telltale video game adaptation before the company shut down.

Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town will undoubtedly be full of juicy tidbits of Hopper's career in the big city. When the character is first introduced in the Netflix series, he's not in the best state of mind. It's possible that there was more weighing on his mind besides the tragedy surrounding his family. So what made Jim Hopper leave New York and his life as a homicide detective? Stranger Things fans will get their answers when the book hits bookstores in June.
