Hit Netflix show Stranger Things has done an excellent job portraying a variety of archetypes, giving fans a specific character they can individually relate to. Whether fans can relate to Will's sensitivity or Hopper's tough exterior, there is a character for everyone, with an in-depth backstory for each.

Part of the fun of the Enneagram personality test is typecasting characters of fans' favorite TV shows. Though opinions can be split due to viewers only having a small taste of each character's story, there are quite a few outstanding characteristics each main character holds, making it slightly easier to make an educated guess on their Enneagram types.

Type One - Lucas Sinclair

Lucas Sinclair waving on the basketball court

Viewers don’t get to see much of Lucas’ struggles or innermost thoughts throughout the show, but it’s clear that he acts as the moral compass of the group. Lucas is always the type of friend to keep everyone on track, from guiding his friends in the right direction to encouraging Max to open up in season four.

With a good head on his shoulders, it's clear that Lucas is the friend those turn to for honesty and advice, as he has proven to be pretty emotionally mature for his age. Ones are known to be purposeful and rational, both of which are the important qualities that encompass Lucas as a human being.

Type Two - Mike Wheeler

Mike Wheeler looking concerned at school

There are several references in the show of Mike's house being the central hangout spot, which is a perfect example of Mike's natural hospitality. Though Mike has a tougher and more critical exterior, his walls come down around Eleven, as he sees himself as her protector, secondary to Hopper.

Mike was also quick to attend to Will’s side in season two throughout his many struggles, which proves that's just the kind of guy Mike truly is. He’s sassy and full of fire, but he’s a loyal friend through and through that will always attend to the needs of his loved ones.

Type Three - Nancy Wheeler

Nancy Wheeler holding a gun

Pragmatic and determined, Nancy has always been the kind of girl that won’t stop until she’s satisfied, in any facet of her life. Whether in terms of her career at The Hawkins Post or aiding Mike and his friends in escaping the chaos from the Upside Down.

Like any teen, everyone questions where they fit in and who they truly are, and as far as Nancy goes, she's always insisted on navigating who she truly wants to be whether in terms of her popularity or her good-girl image. Though Nancy evolves quite a bit throughout the series, one theme remains constant, and that is her struggle to upkeep her identity, which is very important to threes who desire a strong sense of belonging and take pride in their work.

Type Four - Eleven

Fours are typically known for their strong emotions, and Eleven is the perfect example of this. Having been through loads of trauma, she channels her powerful emotions into her telepathic gifts and powers, which is largely how she's such a powerful force.

Her intense fear of rejection stems from her deep-rooted abandonment issues, but it's not uncommon for all fours to feel this way naturally. El has a constant fear of her loved ones inevitably leaving or growing to hate her, which explains why she is so hyper-fixated on remaining a good person and not misusing her powers for evil.

Type Four - Jonathan Byers

Jonathan Byers on the couch looking concerned

Framed as a misunderstood soul, Jonathan revels in his uniqueness and doesn't mind being more of a lone wolf, though he's not opposed to forming bonds with characters like Nancy. He prides himself on being different and not conforming to societal standards, which is common for many fours.

Mysterious and moody, Jonathan refers to himself as an outsider, which could trickle into a possible five wing. However, Jonathan also has the creative aspect of the personality type with his passion for photography, which is also very typical of fours.

Type Five - Dustin Henderson

Though many believe Dustin to be a type seven due to his witty charm and people skills, he’s overall very knowledgable and has fun thinking outside the box, as a true five does. The five is fittingly nicknamed “The Investigator,” as Dustin loves flexing his smarts and excels in getting to the bottom of mysteries as a creative problem-solver.

Although he can be insecure in certain areas of his life where he has no control, like his love life before Suzie came along, his curiosity and determination take him quite far. His main motivation is being seen as useful, as he sees being informed as his primary form of safety.

Type Six - Joyce Byers

Joyce Byers mouth agape at her store

Fiercely loyal and protective over those she loves, there is no limit to how far Joyce will go for Will, Hopper, or the rest of the gang. Joyce is the definition of sacrificial love and she always continues to press on despite any hardships she's gone through.

When she is unhealthy, she becomes a bundle of nerves and anxiety, though no one can blame her after all she’s been through. However, at her healthiest, fans see her as lovable and admirable for her extensive efforts.

Type Seven - Steve Harrington

Steve Harrington in the water looking off dramatically

Spontaneous, curious, and enthusiastic are just a few adjectives that sum up Steve Harrington, and a general type seven personality. Though he has come a long way from who he was at the beginning of the show, he became his true self once emerging from the popularity bubble.

Upon finding himself, Steve realized his love for exploring and connecting with others and even developed an unlikely yet wholesome friendship with Dustin. His possible six wing could also explain his loyal nature in terms of friendships, making Steve one of the most fun and likable characters on the show.

Type Eight - Jim Hopper

Jim Hopper tearfully looking at Joyce before the deathly explosion

Fans weren't necessarily sure of how to feel about Hopper at the beginning of the show, with his clear anger issues and intimidation methods. However, fans quickly learned that his tough exterior, like many eights, is essentially just a mask for the pain and trauma he's undergone, like the loss of his daughter.

Though he's stubborn, many fans let this quality slide, as he is always able to eventually come around and apologize. Additionally, it's easier to sympathize with Hopper, knowing that all he's trying to do is protect El and Joyce at the end of the day.

Type Eight - Max Mayfield

Max Mayfield outside looking curious

Outspoken and bold, Max became a fan favorite early on, as viewers admired her tough outer shell despite her young age. Like many eights, she acts tough to mask inner insecurities and weaknesses, including her family's instability and her rocky relationship with Billy.

Like a true eight, Max has a bit of difficulty in opening up and being emotionally vulnerable when she's struggling, mostly in season 4 when she begins distancing herself from Lucas and the gang. However, when she's healthy, she gives great and confident advice and can be a great leader.

Type Nine - Will Byers

Will Byers in the rain, looking at his friends dramatically

Will is pretty go-with-the-flow and doesn’t often speak up, unless things progress too far, making him uncomfortable and forced to be outspoken about his emotional needs. He also often assures his friends he’s fine even when he’s experiencing trauma, which is quite common for many nines.

Many fans feel bad for Will, especially at times he's proven to be a caring friend and he doesn't exactly get the same energy back. However, Will is the glue that keeps the group together, as his peacekeeping nature is more often a gift than a curse.
