While episode names don’t usually give away too much, the Stranger Things season 5 premiere title might hint at Eddie Munson’s return—but this comes with a dark twist. Stranger Things season 4 introduced viewers to the likable punk Eddie Munson, a Dungeons and Dragons-loving outcast who made a major impression on the Netflix hit’s fan base. However, in a devastating twist, Eddie was killed off in the Stranger Things season 4 finale.

As series star Maya Hawke accurately noted, Stranger Things had too many main characters to keep Eddie around in the show’s fifth, final season. However, this brutal death was still heartbreaking, so it was a welcome surprise to see the title of Stranger Things season 5’s premiere hint at Eddie’s return. The title, ”Chapter One: The Crawl,” could be a reference to the first line in Metallica’s "Master of Puppets" pre-chorus, which is "come crawling faster, obey your master.” "Master of Puppets" was the song Eddie used to distract Vecna’s minions, a plan that ultimately cost him his life in the Stranger Things season 4 finale, and now the series could be referencing it again—albeit in a darker fashion.

Stranger Things 5's Episode Title Hints At Eddie's Dark Future

Eddie Robin and Steve in Stranger Things 4

While Eddie used "Master of Puppets" to successfully fool Vecna’s monsters, if the season 5 premiere’s title is a reference to his character, this won’t necessarily be good news. Vecna took Billy’s form in Stranger Things season 4, meaning the villain can imitate his earlier victims to torment his latest prey. This could mean that Vecna will take the form of Eddie to mess with a distraught, grieving Dustin. While this would be a depressing prospect, there is another, even worse clue to Eddie’s fate in the famous Metallica track’s lyrics. Eddie may return not as a mirage hiding Vecna, but as Vecna’s latest undead puppet.

"Master of Puppets" compels the crawling subject to “obey your master.” Now that he died in the Upside Down, Eddie might return under Vecna's control. While Billy’s appearance in Stranger Things season 4 clarified that the villain can take the shape of his earlier victims to trick people, Stranger Things season 3 proves that Vecna can also possess the bodies of people he has killed. Like one of the iconic villains who inspired Vecna, the Night King, the character can puppeteer an army of dead victims as evidenced by Billy amassing an undead army of unthinking drones to take over Hawkins while possessed by the Mind Flayer in Stranger Things season 3.

What Else "The Crawl" Could Mean For Stranger Things 5

While “Chapter One: The Crawl” could imply either of these tragic fates for Eddie, these are not necessarily the only meanings that the title could take on. “The Crawl” could refer to Dr. Owns escaping the desert-based NINA Project facility if he survived the army’s attack on the secret location. It could, as one optimistic Twitter user argued, refer to Eddie crawling out of the Upside-Down, although this unlikely possibility might be a bit optimistic. “The Crawl” could also refer to Max’s emergence from her coma or, more ominously, Vecna’s emergence from the Upside-Down after he was temporarily defeated by Eleven in the Stranger Things season 4 finale.
