Warning: contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 4.

Having recently released its latest episodes, Stranger Things' fourth and penultimate season is still at the forefront of pop culture conversation, but so too is the show's final season, which fans are already desperate to see. Viewers, of course, do not know many exact plot details yet, but the Duffer brothers have already come out in interviews to unveil some key reveals regarding the season.

Whether it be to do with the actual creation of the season or with the story, the show's creators have given fans a good bit to think about as they patiently await any droplets of information for the show's last season.

Writing Set To Be Done In 2022

The Duffer brothers have revealed that following season 4, they will be taking a short but well-earned vacation before beginning to properly write season 5 in August, aiming to finish by the end of the year.

While nobody really wants to wait for season 5, a safe bet for the season's release will be anytime in 2024, with filming for the season likely taking place sometime next year.

Probable Time Jump

One very noticeable consequence of the series' production is how rapidly the younger actors are growing up despite only eight months having passed in-world.

It does not affect the show's quality, but many have pointed out how noticeable it is in season 4 and since the brothers have revealed to TV Line that season 5 will likely feature a time-jump. Given the state of Hawkins at the end of season 4, it will be exciting to see how the talented brothers pull this off.

No Russia - For Now

Hopper and Demtri in Stranger Things 4

In their interview with Collider, the brothers got asked about whether or not the series is done with Russia, with fans also having questions about its presence in season 5, and they reveal that, as of now, it is.

While anything can change in the story, and it did make for a unique change of scenery, Russia not being in the current plans does make sense given Hopper, Joyce, and Murray wrapping up the story there in season 4.

Set In Hawkins & The Upside Down

While having a variety of locations in season 4 was fun and unique for the show, fans will be happy to know that season 5 will take place in the show's two main settings.

The brothers have revealed that season 5 will be set primarily in both Hawkins and the Upside Down, the two locations which are fitting for the show's swan song and bringing the series in a full circle.

Everyone Back Together & Pairings Of Old

With everybody back in Hawkins together, it will be interesting if the brothers keep the typical structure of character groupings splitting off before uniting as a whole. They have given some insight into this in an interview with Happy Sad Confused.

The brothers have stated that the characters are all together in Hawkins but that OG groupings from the first season can be expected. This points to the likes of Nancy/Jonathan/Steve and Mike/Lucas/Will/Dustin/El being together with others integrated, but let's all hope that Steve and Dustin's iconic friendship still gets to shine.

Shorter Than Season 4

The brothers revealed a lot on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, including the fact that season 5 will be a more regular-length season, unlike season 4.

The big reason they attribute to this is that the characters already know the threat. They do not have to spend two hours out of the know, they are well aware of what they are up against, and that makes complete sense even if fans did enjoy nine lengthy episodes, with the season 4 finale well over two hours long.

No New Characters

Eddie from Stranger Things 4

A trend in Stranger Things that certainly annoys if not saddens many is the introduction of an immensely likable main character who gets killed in the same season. That trend appears to be dying with the beloved Eddie Munson and his amazing character arc in Season 4.

On the Stranger Things aftershow, the brothers confirmed that no major new characters would be introduced. Not only is this good because fans do not need to worry about their death, but it also means that the writers can delve further into the wonderful array of characters available.

IF There Is A Split, It Will Get Engineered

Vecna makes Nancy see the future

Season 4 is unique in many ways, from the spreading out of characters to the episode length, but also in its release, which came staggered, split into two volumes a month apart. With so much conversation and hype around the show, the split seems to have been a success.

That has led many to wonder if this staggered release will return for season 5, to which the brothers have stated via Collider they do not necessarily know, but if they did decide on that, they would write to the split. They have said that they got lucky that episode 7 worked to be such a great split-point, but that next season they will integrate a split into the natural structure of the season, which can only help its quality.

Return Of The King Style Ending

While the brothers have stated that season 5 will be shorter than season 4, they have said that the series finale will be "at least two hours" long.

The two have also joked about a Return of the King style ending, with "like eight endings." This would honestly fit incredibly well, assuming that the surviving characters all get fitting and well-deserved endings.

The Opening Scene Is Mapped Out & Will Be All Guns Blazing

Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven in Stranger Things season 4's finale

The brothers have noted in interviews via Collider that a key difference between seasons 4 and 5 is the fact that characters in season 5 already know the threat from the Upside Down and the D&D-based villain Vecna, so time will not be spent catching them up or having them figure it out.

Since that is the case, they have said the opening of season 5 will be "pedal to the metal" and have also revealed that they have the opening all mapped out, calling it "pretty wild", although, like all things in the story this could change. Given the well-documented planning from the brothers for this show, this does not come as a surprise in the slightest, and fans just wish they could see this fully realized vision sooner rather than in 2023/2024.

The Ending Feels Good And Locked In

Steve and Nancy in the Winnebago in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2

The Duffer brothers have noted their approach to writing Stranger Things as focusing more on pacing than length and having an end goal in sight, with them preferring to have a fuzzy middle rather than no clear ending.

Therefore it is no surprise that they believe, according to Collider, they have the show's ending locked in even before officially writing the scripts. They say that the conclusion they have in their minds mapped out "feels good." With the consistency they have shown thus far, it will be to the surprise of no one if they stick the landing, something so many other big shows fail to do.

Will To Have A Massive Role

Noah Schnapp as Will Byers in Stranger Things Season 4

Will Byers is quite a crucial piece to the Upside Down puzzle, but he takes a backseat in season 4 alongside Mike and Jonathan. That is set to change in season 5.

Speaking on Will to Collider, the brothers have stated that he will be central to the entire story of season 5, and given the focus that will be placed on the Upside Down and Will revealing Vecna as alive in the final scenes of season 4, this comes as no surprise. Many fans just hope Will gets some sort of happy ending, but either way, his character arc is set to be one of the most important of the show's final season.

Crucial Reveals About The Upside Down

Hawkins being invaded by the Upside Down

Season 4 revealed so much about the Stranger Things story, such as Vecna being the big bad all along, what happened in the lab with Brenner and the children, etc. Season 5 is slated to have more colossal reveals, however, these will be more to do with the Upside Down.

When speaking to Collider and other outlets, the brothers have stated that season 5 will reveal a lot more about the nature of the Upside Down and answer crucial questions such as why it is stuck on the date that Will disappeared. Fans have and will continue to theorize about the Upside Down until these answers come, and when they do come, social media may well go into meltdown.
