Nancy and Robin continue a genius Stranger Things character tradition in Stranger Things season 4. One reason why Stranger Things is so beloved is because of its interesting and largely likable cast of characters. Robin and Nancy are already liked as individual characters, but with their team-up in Stranger Things season 4, they follow a great tradition that started in season 2.

In Stranger Things season 4, the gang must band together to face a new threat: Vecna, a monstrous entity who can psychically link with his victims and make them see visions of their trauma before he kills them. Nancy (Natalia Dyer), a passionate journalist for Hawkins High's newspaper, is determined to find out more about Vecna and why he's killing teens in Hawkins. Steve (Joe Keery) originally plans to go with Nancy to the library to look for clues, but since Robin (Maya Hawke) is unable to drive Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Max (Sadie Sink) around, she volunteers to go with Nancy instead. Though the two teens start off on the wrong foot, they end up working well together and finding the clue to breaking Vecna's spell after talking with Victor Creel (Robert Englund).

Robin and Nancy continue the Stranger Things tradition of unexpected but delightful character pairings. One of the greatest things about the show over the past few seasons is the way it has been able to throw together different character pairings and make them compelling to watch. Some of these pairings initially seem like they may lead to disaster but soon become the heart of the season as genuine friendships are formed. This started in Stranger Things season 2 when Steve and Dustin unexpectedly started to bond, with Steve even giving his new friend advice about girls. Season 3 followed this with Steve and Robin, who start off as merely Scoops Ahoy coworkers but end up creating a heartwarming bond after the two of them are caught and tortured by the Russians while infiltrating a secret Russian base underneath Starcourt Mall.

Nancy and Robin are a great example of the odd couple dynamic that Stranger Things does well. Nancy is more straitlaced and traditionally feminine, while Robin is awkward and goofy. Robin definitely gets on Nancy's nerves at first, but after teaming up at the library and successfully (and hilariously) disguising themselves as psychology students in order to get access to Victor Creel, the two of them form a bond. Robin even serves as a source of support when Nancy vents about her relationship with Jonathan. When Nancy asks Robin in "Chapter 6: The Dive" if she and Robin are officially friends, the answer is clear. Just like Steve and Dustin and Steve and Robin in previous seasons, this unlikely duo turns into a solid friendship.

Ever since Barb's death in Stranger Things season 1, Nancy has never really had a female friend to hang out with and confide in. Now that Robin and Nancy have formed a bond, this can change. Nancy and Robin may have completely different personalities, but they end up working well as friends. Hopefully, Stranger Things can continue this delightful unlikely friendship trend in its final season.
