Warning: Spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 4, volume 1!

Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) finds herself as Vecna's latest victim at the end of Stranger Things season 4, episode 7, "Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab," but there's a theory on how she breaks free. Vecna, who is actually Henry Creel/Number One, serves as this season's primary villain, preying on Hawkins teenagers. While Vecna kills a handful of teens, Nancy seems like she will be the next on his victim list unless her friends can help her escape.

After following Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) into the "Water Gate" under Lover's Lake, Nancy finds herself in the Upside Down. Nancy, Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), and Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) then help save Steve by battling Demobats before running off to safety. They later arrive in the Upside Down version of the Wheeler house before making their way to the trailer park. The spot where Chrissy Cunningham (Grace Van Dien) is killed begins emerging as an Upside Down Gate, which the younger group breaks open for the older teens to travel through. However, when it's Nancy's turn, Steve discovers she's in a trance, seemingly stuck through Vecna's curse.

Upon ending up in a vision depicting the site of Barb's death, Nancy manages to break into Vecna's mind, witnessing his true identity as Henry Creel/Number One. Though Nancy is in danger, she uses her situation as an opportunity to gather more of the truth. Granted, Stranger Things season 4, volume 1 ends with still under Vecna's curse in the Upside Down. The good news is that Nancy is shown in the teaser for volume 2, indicating that she escapes the curse, but how?

Stranger Things Theory: Robin Uses Nancy's Favorite Song To Break Vecna's Curse

Stranger Things 4 Robin in Nancy's room

Thus far, Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) has been the only potential victim of Vecna's in Stranger Things to successfully survive the curse. The use of her favorite song, Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill," helps, but so does using the memories of her family and friends. The song likely gives her that extra push to acknowledge some of those good memories, reiterating that music and familiarity can still be the key to saving people from Vecna's curse. Nancy is notably at Pennhurst when Robin discovers this point, and the latter might be the key to saving Nancy. Interestingly, the new friendship between Nancy and Robin has become a highlight of season 4, so it's fitting that Hawke's character is a core figure in the interesting theory explaining how Nancy is saved.

Nancy encourages the group to go to her house in the Upside Down to retrieve her guns. When she enters her room, she finds that the guns aren't there because the Upside Down is stuck in 1983, before her firearms existed. Interestingly, this is not the first time some of the group was in Nancy's room. In "Dear Billy," Nancy picks out clothes for her and Robin to visit Victor Creel (Robert Englund) as fake psychology students. When Robin sees Nancy's room, she wanders around to look at Nancy's belongings. At one point, she even picks up cassette tapes on the bedside table, which could be important to helping Nancy escape Vecna's curse. Perhaps, one of those tapes holds Nancy's favorite song, which the group can use to encourage Nancy to break free.

How Eddie Can Help Save Nancy In The Upside Down

If Robin and the group discover Nancy's favorite song, there would be the question of how they could play it. Unlike Max, Nancy doesn't travel around with a cassette player, so they would need to use resources within the Munson trailer. That leads to Eddie's beloved guitar, which he talks to and kisses in Stranger Things season 4's first episode. It's possible that Eddie steps up to personally play Nancy's song to help break her free, which falls in line with a shot of Quinn's character in a pre-release trailer.

Coincidentally, one of the most intriguing scenes ahead of Stranger Things season 4's release was that of Eddie playing his guitar on a roof in the Upside Down. This scene doesn't occur in volume 1, meaning something lures Eddie back into the Upside Down shortly after "Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab." It would make sense for the rest of the group to go back through the gate in the Munson trailer to help Nancy, with Eddie using his guitar to play whatever song Robin previously discovered. While Nancy is still a potential character to die in Stranger Things season 4, volume 2, it looks like she will be around for the next fight alongside her friends, meaning the attempt to break the curse will work.
