Will Netflix move forward with The Stranger season 2? Directed by Daniel O'Hara and Hannah Quinn, the British crime series is based on Harlan Coben's 2015 novel, and was adapted for TV by screenwriter Danny Brocklehurst. The Stranger season 1 premiered on January 30, 2020.

The Stranger season 1 begins with numerous people being blackmailed by a young woman (Hannah John-Kamen) with unknown motivations. A man named Adam Price (Richard Armitage) learns that his wife Corrine (Dervla Kirwan) faked a pregnancy and possibly stole money from a local football club. She ultimately goes missing, prompting Adam to begin his own investigation while DS Johanna Griffin (Siobhan Finneran) deals with a separate group of problems. Meanwhile, Johanna's colleague John Katz (Paul Kaye) covers up a conspiracy so that he can secure the appropriate funds to pay for his sick daughter's medical bills. Only, there's a huge twist that leaves John foaming from the mouth and spiraling out of control.

The penultimate episode of The Stranger season 1 reveals the true identity of the titular character, along with her blood connection to another main player. But the action mostly falls on the fate of Adam's wife Corrine, and why she disappeared. Here's everything we expect for The Stranger season 2 on Netflix.

The Stranger Season 2 Renewal

Expect Netflix to wait approximately three to six weeks after The Stranger season 1's release date before making a renewal or cancellation announcement. Since the series has received strong reviews and clearly sets up more episodes, it seems most likely that Netflix will greenlight The Stranger season 2 before the end of Winter 2020. The original book is indeed a standalone story, but there's plenty of potential for Netflix to produce more seasons, especially given the performers involved.

The Stranger Season 2 Release Date

Anthony Head in The Stranger

If Netflix orders The Stranger season 2 by mid-March, then filming and post-production will theoretically take up the rest of the year. Expect new episodes to release around the same time in January 2021. We'll predict that The Stranger season 2 will release sometime between January 25-29, 2021.

The Stranger Season 2 Story

Richard Armitage in The Stranger

The Stranger season 1 concludes with a tidy wrap-up. For the initial eight episodes, Paul Kaye arguably delivers the most chaotic performance, as his character John Katz attempts to protect his sick daughter while covering his tracks to protect financial interests, only to learn that his ex-wife had been poisoning his daughter all along — the result of a mental health disorder known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy (see Hulu's The Act).

Aside from Katz's downfall, The Stranger season 1 finale wraps up the Corinne murder mystery. After a violent confrontation between Adam and a former ally, he seems to be in the clear thanks to some clean-up work from DS Johanna Griffin. The irony, however, is that their big secret connects to the premise for the stranger's work. And now that we know the true identity of said stranger, otherwise known as Chrissy, her on-going quest for justice could very well cause a few problems for Adam or — perhaps more likely — for his father. Expect The Stranger season 2 on Netflix to include much more screen time for John-Kamen as the title character.
