What if you suddenly woke up with a superpower that didn't just give a gift, but demand that you be directly linked to somebody you had never met? That's the question posed in Humanoid's Strangelands, along with plenty of others related to the fictional world it's helping to expand. Together, the mystery is putting an intriguing twist on Humanoid's slate of new comics--and thankfully, we've got an exclusive preview of the first issue.

Strangelands is just one new series created as part of H1, an imprint of comic books from Humanoid forming one shared, super powered universe. It may be the publisher's first step into periodical series, but they've turned to some established names to guide the new endeavor. With Chief Creative Officer John Cassaday, and Mark Waid acting as Humanoid's Director of Creative Development, those with an eye for upstart comic books have been watching closely. Now, Strangelands (co-written by Eisner Award nominee Mags Visaggio) is giving a look at their work thus far.

We've got an exclusive preview of Strangelands #1, throwing readers into the mess that apparently comes with the emergence of superpowers. At least, how that transformation has gone for the book's two stars, Elakshi and Adam Land (no relation), judging by the first pages that are equal parts power and pursuit. Take a look at the preview pages below:

It isn't every superpower story that begins by making a gift cause for being killed, but that's exactly how Visaggio and Little Badger have chosen to launch their series. How their chase relates to some strange, squid-based science in Colorado is anyone's guess for now, but we'll be darned if it doesn't make Strangelands a more intriguing comic (and one that more than lives up to its name). What is the source of Adam's power? How are his and Elakshi's related? And perhaps most importantly, what exactly is "starting" when they drift too far apart? Those questions will likely be answered inthe following pages of Strangelands #1, but until the full issue arrives, interested readers can check out the full solicitation information for the book below:

Elakshi and Adam Land aren’t married. In fact, a month ago, they were perfect strangers, dwelling in lands foreign to one another. But now, they’re forced to remain by one another’s side, for their separation could mean the planet’s demise. Their greatest challenge is to stay together — even if they have to tear the world apart to do so.

Strangelands #1 will be available on July 10th direct from Humanoid.
