Dan Harmon is currently working on an adaptation of the Strange Planet comic in the form of a new Apple TV+ series. Over the past decade, Harmon has amassed a lengthy resume of highly-rated shows and movies, including the popular animated series Rick and MortyKnown for his absurdist comedy, Harmon's distinctive creative voice always bleeds through every project he is involved with, and it seems he is looking to bring that voice to another show.

Deadline reports that Harmon is now adapting the Strange Planet comic into a new Apple TV+ series. Based on the webcomic and graphic novels created by Nathan Pyle, Apple handed Harmon's project a straight-to-series order, adding another new animated series to Harmon's queue. Since the project is still in its early stages, no release date has been announced.

Strange Planet Comic Nathan Pyle

Pyle first published his Strange Planet comic back in November of 2019. Since then, the comics have been regularly posted online, as well as compiled into two graphic novels so far. The comics feature big-eyed, blue "beings" from another planet that shares similarities with Earth. For instance, while the aliens do sunbathe and sneeze (like human beings), they describe these actions via phrases such as "sun damage" and "face fluid explosions." Given Harmon's track record with creating compelling characters from different worlds, it seems his teaming up with Pyle for the new series is a great match.

The new series is produced by Apple Studios along with ShadowMachine, who are best known as the producers behind Bojack Horseman. Harmon and Pyle will serve as executive producers, while writer Amalia Levari (Over the Garden Wall) will serve as showrunner. Though no release date has been announced, the Strange Planet series will most likely debut in late 2022 or early 2023.
