The X-Men's Storm first met Charles Xavier when she was a street thief in Cairo. Ororo Munroe is one of the most famous, celebrated mutants on Earth. One of the world's rare Omega level mutants, she has served as a member of the X-Men, the Avengers, and even the Fantastic Four. She is powerful enough to single-handedly defeat a clone of Thor and to manipulate weather systems on the opposite side of the globe.
Most readers will remember Storm's debut in 1975's Giant-Size X-Men #1 when Charles Xavier headed to Africa to recruit a mutant who was worshiped as a goddess. Years later she supercharged this role when she became Queen of Wakanda, an object of faith and worship by the Wakandans that made her more powerful than ever before. But, surprisingly, Storm's actual origin is a lot less prestigious than many fans realize.
Storm's mother N'Dare was the priestess of a tribe in Africa, and she married the photojournalist David Munroe; Ororo was brought up in Cairo, Egypt, but she was tragically orphaned at age five when a plane crashed into the family home. The young Ororo escaped with just the clothes she was wearing and wound up living on the streets. She soon fell in with a gang of pickpockets, which was how she first met Charles Xavier. She picked Professor X's pocket and found herself pursued by the tourist, who used his telepathy to keep track of the young thief, and ultimately froze her in place so he could get his wallet back.
Storm actually continued working as a thief for some years, before she grew old enough to sense a spiritual call to Kenya. She wandered for thousands of miles and would have died of thirst if not for an encounter with her future husband T'Challa of Wakanda, the man destined to become Black Panther. Her powers triggered during the journey, and when she arrived in Kenya she was hailed as a goddess. She held that role for some years until finally, Xavier headed to Kenya - and the rest is history.
Storm's origin story has left her with a permanent weakness; claustrophobia, a fear of enclosed spaces that she has frequently had to battle with. The X-Men are often captured and imprisoned, meaning Storm has been placed in so many small prison cells. She has conquered her fears time and again, overcoming the crushing sense of fear that comes from being shut in. But Storm's natural home will always be outside or, barring that, a room with an easily accessible skylight for her to fly out of when she wants a break from the X-Men.
