Steven Spielberg is a busy man and has a full schedule of upcoming movies. Thanks to his latest film, Ready Player One, he's become the first director to earn $10 billion at the global box office. He was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his work on The PostHe isn't just resting on his classic films like the Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones franchises, Spielberg is consistently working on new projects while still remaining faithful to his old films (he is the executive producer on the Jurassic World films). His career has consisted of beloved genre stories like E.T. and moving historical dramas such as Schindler's List. And it doesn't look like the director is stopping any time soon.

Here are the films Spielberg currently has in production.

Indiana Jones 5

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones on the ground in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

First up on the docket for Spielberg is Indiana Jones 5. The film is set to start production sometime in the spring in the UK. It will once again feature Harrison Ford as the titular adventuring (although now slightly older, more grizzled) hero. There are very few details regarding the plot of film other than the fact that Shia LaBeouf’s character Mutt Williams from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will not return and that Dr. Jones will not die. George Lucas is also not involved in writing the story. That role goes to Crystal Skull and Jurassic Park screenwriter and frequent Spielberg collaborator David Koepp.

Indiana Jones 5 hits theaters on July 10th, 2020.

West Side Story

Tony and Maria in West Side Story

Since 2014, Spielberg has expressed interest in directing a remake of the 1961 classic West Side Story. The legendary Romeo & Juliet inspired musical about feuding gangs in New York City has been a favorite of of the director. It looks like he may finally get the chance to bring his vision of the story to life. Spielberg has announced his intention to start work on the West Side Story after Indiana Jones 5. Casting notices for the film have even gone out looking for a Latina actress to play Maria- the role made famous by Natalie Wood in the original film. The project also includes Oscar-nominated Munich and Lincoln screenwriter Tony Kushner. This passion project would be Spielberg's first musical.

The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

Oscar Isaac joins Spielberg's Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

Spielberg has been attached to direct The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara since 2014. He was originally planning it as his next project after Ready Player One, but now it seems his plans may have changed. Both Mark Rylance and Oscar Isaac are attached to star in the film based on David I. Kertzer's 1998 novel of the same name. The book is based on a true story about a young Jewish boy living in Italy in 1858 who is secretly baptized and taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. The boy's parents become part of a larger political battle in order to get their son back. Once more Spielberg is teaming with screenwriter Tony Kushner on the project. Other than the casting of Rylance and Isaac there has been no updates to this film, meaning it could possibly be pushed back even further.

Blackhawk

Spielberg was most recently announced to produce and possibly direct a Blackhawk film for DC. The character is the leader of a WWII squadron of pilots who take on the Nazis and Axis Powers- as well as more comic book based foes. With all the upcoming projects DC has announced, it seems that a Blackhawk film may not happen for some time. Spielberg still plans on doing Indy 5 and West Side Story first, so it seems like the timeline might work out well for all involved. Once again, David Koepp will be joining the director by writing the screenplay for the comic book based film.
