Steven-Spielberg-still-wants-to-remake-West-Side-Story

Steven Spielberg’s reboot of the anthology series Amazing Stories gets a premiere date on AppleTV+, along with unveiling a first look image. Created by Spielberg, Amazing Stories originally ran from 1985 to 1987. Bringing together a blend of fantasy and horror, as well as comedic elements, the show was nominated for 12 Emmy Awards. It won five, particularly recognized for its standout episodes and its writing. Amazing Stories also featured performances from notable actors, such as Patrick Swayze, Danny DeVito and Mark Hamill.

However, the anthology was not a success in the ratings. NBC, which aired Amazing Stories, opted not to renew the series after the two-year contract expired. A reboot has been in the works for years, with Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller initially chosen to write the pilot and executive produce. Following some behind the scenes changes, including Fuller’s departure from the project over reported creative differences, the revival of Amazing Stories is finally set to premiere. Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, known for creating Once Upon a Time, will serve as showrunners. They’re also executive producers, along with Spielberg.

Described as a reimagining of the Emmy winning anthology, Amazing Stories now has a premiere date on the AppleTV+ streaming service. Per Comic Book, it was announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that five episodes of the reboot will be made available on March 6. Along with that bit of news, a photo was released from one of the reboot’s episodes. Titled “The Rift”, the installment will be directed by Mark Mylod. Previously, Mylod has directed HBO’s Succession and Game of Thrones. You can see the image, which includes Halt & Catch Fire actress Kerry Bishe, below.

Mylod is one of a number of talented directors that Amazing Stories has lined up. Chris Long, who has worked on The Americans, will helm an episode. Susanna Fogel, known for The Spy Who Dumped Me, will direct as well. In front of the camera, familiar faces will be a part of the reboot. Dylan O’Brien, Victoria Pedretti, and Josh Holloway will all appear in the AppleTV+ series. Robert Forster, who passed away last year, will also be seen in his final role.

A trailer for the reboot of Amazing Stories will likely drop in the coming weeks, giving us a better sense of the reimagined series. One aspect to look for is that, in contrast to The Twilight Zone, which has a similar setup, the endings of the original anthology tended to be more hopeful in tone. It will be interesting to see if AppleTV+ will maintain the optimism in this updated iteration.
