Steve Martin says he will retire from acting once Hulu's hit whodunit Only Murders in the Building has finished its run. Since the 1970s, Martin has had a prolific acting and writing career, best known for comedies like The Jerk, Roxanne, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, and The Pink Panther, as well as multiple collaborations with Martin Short, including Three Amigos! and Father of the Bride. Martin actually already retired once in 2009, but decided to come back for Only Murders in the Building.

Having premiered in 2021, Only Murders in the Building stars Martin as a washed-up television actor, Charles-Haden Savage, who teams up with his fellow Arconia residents Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) to start a true-crime podcast and investigate a mysterious murder in their affluent Upper West Side apartment building. Co-written by Martin and John Hoffman, the show quickly caught on with audiences for its comedic approach to the mystery genre and the chemistry amongst its star-studded cast, acting as a veritable career resurgence for Martin. However, it appears the 76-year-old actor is soon ready to close the book on his extensive body of work

In a new cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, Martin got candid about his plans for his future. Talking about Only Murders in the Building, Martin left little room for doubt, saying that once the show is finished, he will not be seeking other projects. Read what he said below:

When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others. I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it.

Retiring after Only Murders is finished makes sense for Martin. He came out of retirement in 2009 purely to pursue the passion project and once it's over, he appears to be content with hanging it up. However, it's unclear exactly when that day will come. Only Murders is currently in the midst of its second season with a season 3 on the way. The acclaimed comedy could take the Ted Lasso route and end after season 3, though it does certainly have the audience to extend beyond that.

Martin's comments should also be taken with a grain of salt. He already tried to stop working once before, but ultimately decided to come back once an undeniable opportunity, Only Murders in the Building, presented itself. For the cream of the comedy crop like Martin, it's often difficult for them to stay retired since they will inevitably get an idea that compels them to keep coming back for more.
