The CW is adapting Stephen King’s short story The Revelations of Becka Paulson into a series. Published in 1984 in an issue of Rolling Stone magazine, the story of Becka Paulson crossed over into some of King’s later work when the character appeared in his 1987 novel The Tommyknockers.
Noted by readers for its quirkiness and pointed metaphors, The Revelations of Becka Paulson follows Becka, a housewife who accidentally shoots herself in the head with a gun while rummaging through a closet for Christmas decorations. With a bullet now lodged in her brain, Becka starts to have strange mental side effects, including hallucinations, erratic behavior, and “revelations” from a 3-D picture of Jesus, which sits atop her television. Becka and her bullet have graced the small screen in the past when The Outer Limits adapted the story for the 1997 episode, “The Revelations of Becka Paulson,” and featured Catherine O' Hara (Schitt's Creek) as the titular character. Now, Becka’s revelations are getting the adaptation treatment in the form of a series.
Per Variety, The CW will adapt King’s work into one-hour drama series (tentatively) titled Revelations. Written by Maise Culver (Last Man Standing), Revelations will follow Becca, a Pollyanna-ish young woman who accidentally shoots herself in the head with a nail gun. Following the incident, Becca is recruited by Jesus to be “the chosen one” who will save the world from the apocalypse. To save the planet Earth, Becca must prove that humanity among mankind still exists, starting with her small midwestern hometown.
Revelations is in the creative hands of Culver, executive producer Katie Lovejoy (Dracula, Dead Inside), and Warner Bros TV. As of this writing, no timeline for Revelation's production has been set. However, if the timing is right, Revelations' paranormal plotlines could taper the sting of the end of the series Supernatural, which is expected to take a curtain call later this year. As production for Revelations gets closer, more details will unravel, including the pivotal casting choice of Becca Paulson.
As it stands, King’s novels getting the adaptation treatment shows no signs of slowing down. One of the most prolific authors of all time, King has a slew of adaptations on the horizon, including The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, The Long Walk, and The Stand, set to premiere on CBS All Access. As for Becca Paulson, the titular character will have plenty of room to grow in an-hour long series. No doubt, the creative forces behind the adaptation of The Revelations of Becka Paulson could make the show a success for the CW.
