Legendary author Stephen King gives his review of Poker Face. The series, which recently debuted on Peacock, follows Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), a woman with the uncanny ability to know when someone is lying, regardless of their alibi. Charlie travels all over America, discovering some outlandish motives and bizarre crimes to solve along the way. Poker Face hails from Rian Johnson, who has long enjoyed exploring the mystery genre, as far back as Brick, and continuing into the Knives Out films. Now, on the heels of Poker Face getting waves of positive reactions, King has posted his brief and glowing review of the mystery-comedy, earning a response from Lyonne.

King frequently shares his thoughts on current movies and shows, recently weighing in on HBO's The Last of Us, so it's no surprise he offered his opinion on Poker Face, to Lyonne's delight.

Why Has Poker Face Gotten Such Strong Reviews?

At a time when most shows are pitched as "eight-hour movies," and even boast about it, Poker Face is being praised for the fact that it returns television to its episodic nature — and it does so well. Though there is an overarching plot of Charlie avoiding capture, it's largely standalone, with each of the show's ten episodes unraveling a specific case. Viewers are free to dip in and enjoy a Poker Face episode without the pressure of having to keep up.

Still, given the combination of Lyonne and Johnson, audiences will likely be tempted to hang around for each individual installment. The series sets up each crime uniquely, showing how it happened and why, before allowing Charlie to piece together a way of catching the criminal. The structure allows for a plethora of guest actors, from Adrien Brody to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, to get their chance to shine.

Although it's yet to be confirmed, Poker Face season 2 seems like a lock. That's especially encouraging, given how Peacock has only aired five of ten episodes so far. With more crimes to pick apart and more guests on the way, the best may be yet to come. But for his part, King is one of many who sounds already convinced of the show's quality.
