Netflix and Stephen King are respectively the biggest names in streaming and the horror genre so it isn't surprising that there are already several Stephen King Netflix adaptations streaming on the platform. This isn't to be confused with Stephen King book-based movies that are also streaming on Netflix, such as the modern sequel to It or The Mist.

In particular, these Stephen King Netflix adaptations are original productions based on the acclaimed writer's stories that are exclusive to the streaming service. Through these movies and TV shows, Netflix has made its mark in the horror genre by paying due tribute to Stephen King. Netflix and Stephen King stories have directly crossed paths to pretty good results so far.

4 In The Tall Grass (2019)

Stephen King Netflix adaptations

In 2019, Netflix released its third Stephen King movie, In the Tall Grass. Based on a 2012 novella co-written by King and his son Joe Hill, In the Tall Grass sports a simple but unsettling premise. Two travelers head into a field of tall grass because they believe a child to be in danger, only to quickly realize that this is no ordinary patch of grass, and now there appears to be no way out. In the Tall Grass is one of the Stephen King Netflix adaptations that has received mixed reviews. However, it is nonetheless an interesting study of raw horror genre elements.

3 Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022)

A collage of characters from Mr. Harrigan's Phone

A young boy named Craig befriends retired businessman John Harrigan, who dies and leaves Craig $800,000. Craig then sneaks the iPhone he gifted Harrigan into his coffin, and when Craig calls Harrigan's phone, he receives an odd reply the next morning. What differentiates Mr. Harrigan's Phone from other Stephen King Netflix adaptations is that it combines horror with a coming-of-age teen drama. This gives the overarching plot, look, and feel a striking familiarity that effectively bleeds horror from nostalgic tropes. The ending of Mr. Harrigan's Phone has also left audiences thinking about it long after the credits roll.

2 1922 (2017)

A man in 1922

Netflix's second King adaptation, 1922, is based on a 2010 novella by Stephen King. 1922 stars Thomas Jane as Wilfred James, a blue-collar farmer who conspires with his son to murder his wife, over her desire to move away and leave their farm life behind. This being a King story, Arlette James doesn't stay buried, returning to torment her killers. Apart from being a period drama, what makes 1922 unique from other Stephen King Netflix adaptations is how it flips the script by giving the horrors that transpire a clear purpose. As the characters beset by supernatural forces deserve everything they get, 1922 offers a twisted sense of justice straight from the bowels of Hell. Like a lot of King novels, 1922 has an intriguing ending.

1 Gerald's Game (2017)

Gerald points at Jessie in Gerald's Game

For decades, most thought Stephen King's 1992 novel Gerald's Game wouldn't be possible to successfully adapt to film, as it focuses almost entirely on one character, and with so many sequences spent delving into that character's mind. Yet, director Mike Flanagan managed to crack the code of adapting the saga of Jesse Burlingame (Carla Gugino), who ends up handcuffed to a bed for days after her husband dies during an attempt at spicing up their love life. Few Stephen King Netflix adaptations are as compelling and cleverly executed as Gerald's Game. Both Carla Gugino and Chiara Aurelia, who plays young Jessie, have won several awards for their performances.
