It is unknown if America Chavez is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s plans, but Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz makes another statement for why she should get the part thanks to a spot on Halloween costume. Marvel Studios is moving towards the end of Phase 3, and as they look forward to the future, they’ll need to find future stars to carry on the universe. Thankfully for Kevin Feige and co, they have a wide library of characters at their disposal.
Fans have continued to ask for the MCU to bring in more female leading heroes, and the universe is slowly making progress with Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel headlining films in 2018 and 2019 respectively. But, they have countless others waiting to be introduced, including the Latina lesbian hero known as American Chavez.
Stephanie Beatriz made her interest in this role known earlier this year, but there has yet to be any indication that Marvel has plans to introduce America soon, let alone if she would be in contention for the role. However, with the Halloween season is in full swing, Beatriz used the festivities as a way to show everyone (Marvel included) just how great she could look in the role.
Her costume already appears to be generating the type of discussion she probably wanted. The official Marvel Twitter account replied to the tweet stating the actress #nailedit with her costume, but it also caught the eye of America’s original comic designer Jamie McKelvie. These reactions are by no means an indication that Beatriz will get the role, but it could get her one step closer to taking a meeting or even Marvel Studios considering the character’s introduction more seriously.
Beatriz isn’t the only actor interested in the role, though. Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez has also registed her interest. Either of these two would be great choices for the role, although their window to play a version of America that most comic readers would be familiar with grows shorter the longer Marvel waits to introduce her; both of these hopefuls are in their mid-thirties, and America has typically been portrayed as a younger hero.
Regardless of who plays America should Marvel have plans to bring her into the MCU, her introduction will be a big moment. Marvel movies have yet to have an openly gay character; it was recently thought Thor: Ragnarok‘s Tessa Thompson confirmed Valkyrie was the first LGBT MCU hero, but she has since clarified it isn’t addressed in the film and she was referring to the character’s comic portrayal. There continues to be a big push for better representation across mega franchises like the MCU, so hopefully it won’t be too long before America Chavez is introduced – with or without Beatriz in the role.
