Warning! SPOILERS about Station 19 season 6, episode 10 ahead. The firehouse team never had much love for Maya’s replacement Captain Beckett, but Station 19 season 6’s prolonged storyline focusing on his drinking at work without looking for help has gone too long and is now hurting the team. While Beckett (Josh Randall) had already been accused of drinking on the job in Station 19 season 5 by Sullivan (Boris Kodjoe), those accusations had more to do with Beckett and Sullivan’s career conflicts than with Beckett’s actions. However, Station 19 season 6 has Beckett making one mistake after another while also antagonizing his firefighters because of his drinking at work, making it imperative for the storyline to be solved.

Since his arrival as captain of Station 19 in the Station 19 season 5 premiere, the team never particularly liked Beckett because of his attitude and the type of firefighting management he represented. Given that he also supplanted Maya, whose issues with Carina in Station 19 began with Maya’s demotion and the perceived loss of her career as she saw it off-course, it would have been challenging for the team to acclimatize to him as a captain and his lack of leadership. Still, things only got worse once Beckett started doing what he was accused of, with many, if not all, of his subordinates second-guessing his orders.

Station 19 Is Ruining The Team With Beckett Still As Captain

Jaina Lee Ortiz as Andy, Barrett Doss as Vic, and Carlos Miranda as Theo in Station 19 season 6 episode 10

Station 19, season 6, episode 10 has Andy scramble to try and find Beckett’s best side in the hope he could lead the firehouse. However, Andy’s best attempts could never solve the problems that built up over time, which only originally were about the team not accepting him as a captain, but recently involved Beckett’s nearsighted decisions and the team recognizing them as such. Andy’s willingness to act as a peacemaker and welcome her team’s complaints while also upholding Beckett’s orders could only go so far in Station 19, season 6, especially as the team feels as fractured as ever and unable to trust their captain.

Station 19 was depicted as a special firehouse since Station 19’s premiere because the team felt like a family. The firehouse A team would have always had problems accepting outsiders as captains precisely for that reason, but Sullivan’s appointment as captain in Station 19 season 2 eventually led the team to accept him because he made an effort to understand them and be part of the team. However, Beckett not only never showed his willingness to do so and always acted as if he knew better, but he also refused to admit his shortcomings. Theo openly calling Beckett out on his terrible judgment only cements the Station 19 team’s fracturing.

Beckett's Alcoholism Story In Station 19 Isn't Giving Him A Chance To Get Better

Josh Randall as Sean Beckett in Station 19 season 6 episode 10

Unlike Sullivan’s story in Station 19 season 3 or even Maya’s mental health crisis that she ignored until she couldn’t anymore and led to Diane’s return in Station 19, the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff isn’t giving Beckett a chance to get better. It did when Sullivan wrongly accused Beckett of drinking on the job, having Sully offer Beckett guidance over where to find AA meetings and what he found useful. However, Station 19 isn’t now that what everyone was afraid of is happening, having Beckett get worse and sloppier, refusing to get help while those around him don’t create an environment where he could feel safe doing so.

The death of Beckett’s probie in Station 19, season 6, episode 10 could bring Beckett to seek help. However, his defensive reaction to Theo confronting him and his choice to still drink while on shift, hint at Beckett not choosing to get better. Considering how long the problem went on, Station 19 will have to fix it quickly, even if that means appointing another captain to lead Station 19.
