The Station 19 winter premiere saw the potential end of Maya and Carina’s relationship, but their breakup won’t last. Maya and Carina first got together in Station 19 season 3 and have seen a lot of highs and lows as well as breakups and makeups since, but season 6, episode 7 suggested they may be done for good. However, their Station 19 history also suggests that Maya and Carina’s breakup isn’t going to be long-lasting, and they will be able to repair their damaged relationship in the future.

Maya and Carina have gone through a lot in Station 19 season 6 as they’ve struggled to cope with their inability to have a baby and the fallout of Maya’s attempt at blackmailing Chief Ross and Sullivan to get her captaincy back. They have been at odds in almost every scene they’ve had this season, and season 6, episode 7 was no exception. Maya will survive the injuries she sustained in the Station 19 fall finale, but she’s far from okay both physically and mentally. Maya has a long road to recovery ahead of her, as does her marriage with Carina.

Maya & Carina Need A Break In Station 19

In the Station 19 winter premiere, Maya gave Carina an ultimatum: if she left and let Maya be involuntarily detained, they’d be done. Carina replied, “I lose you either way, bella. I'd rather lose you and have you be alive.” Based on Maya’s words, they’d be considered broken up for good, but they were said out of fear and desperation. They do need a break, but they don’t need to be done for good. Maya needs time to heal and so does Carina, who has spent her whole life taking care of her loved ones, such as her brother Andrew, and now needs to take care of herself.

In leaving and having Maya put under psychiatric hospitalization in Station 19, she is putting each of their individual needs above their relationship. Maya needed to see how serious things had gotten, as she has been in denial for episodes, and there was no better way to do that than for Carina to walk away at that moment. Carina also made the decision to move out of their shared apartment, which will be good for Carina in the long run as she needs some space and time away from Maya, who has been lashing out at her when she feels trapped and/or scared.

Despite their separation currently in Station 19, Maya and Carina will be able to overcome this obstacle together, it just may take some time and work on themselves individually. Their relationship has survived many trials and tribulations, from infidelity to arguments over marriage and children and more, and will continue to do so. Both Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy have been known to make things worse before they can get better for their characters and their relationships, and Maya and Carina are no exception to this.

Carina’s character moved from Grey’s Anatomy to Station 19 in season 3 because of her relationship with Maya. Her connections to Station 19 have all come through their relationship, and it has become such a big part of both of their characters and the show as a whole. Maya and Carina will find their way back to each other not just because it makes sense narratively, but because of their relationship’s importance to Station 19 and their characters.
