The current co-writer and artist of Static in the DC Comics Universe wants readers to know something important: The hero's name isn't actually Static Shock. While the popular Dakotaverse character might have starred in an animated series called Static Shock, Virgil Hawkin's superhero name isn't the same as the iconic title - and the writer/artist of Static: Shadows of Dakota wants to clear up the misconception. On their Twitter account, writer Nikolas Draper-Ivey, the artist on Static: Season One alongside writer Vita Ayala and ChrisChross, who is co-writing and drawing the upcoming Static: Shadows of Dakota for DC Comics, shared a reminder about Virgil Hawkins' actual superhero name. Draper-Ivey wrote that the "hero's name and original comic is STATIC and not STATIC SHOCK," while adding, "Static Shock is the title of the animated series and even in the series he is referred to as STATIC," and saying it was time to "Put some respect on that name!"Related: DC Confirms Batman's Superpower Is His Family

Static Isn't "Static Shock," But The Name Does Have Meaning

The confusion surrounding Static's superhero name stems from his wildly popular animated series, Static Shock, which ran from 2000-2004 on Kids' WB. In that series, Static, voiced by Phil LaMarr, was referred to in-universe as Static, but the show's title often led to the character being referred to as "Static Shock." Draper-Ivey is trying to clear up that misconception as his newest series is about to launch for DC Comics in February.

Draper-Ivey's reminder about Static's real superhero name simply being "Static" and not "Static Shock" received a significant endorsement from Denys Cowan, one of the co-founders of Milestone Media and co-creators of the character alongside the late Dwayne McDuffie, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle. Cowan tweeted the "correct name is and always will be Static" while thanking the artist and writer for the statement.

Static's real name as a hero being mistaken as "Static Shock" shows how much influence the popular animated series had on the character in the DC Universe. However, despite the show's title, Nikolas Draper-Ivey reminding readers that Static's name isn't "Static Shock" is an important message, as many readers, even some of the biggest fans of Virgil Hawkins, still make a mistake regarding what he should be called. Ultimately, the hero is named Static and not Static Shock and should be referred to as such.
