With it set to conclude the show, Brec Bassinger reveals Stargirl's season 3 finale was shot with two alternate endings. The CW series was one of the last in the Arrowverse, even with its existing on a parallel universe, as Nexstar's acquisition of the network led to the near-complete cancelation of the remaining shows in the superhero universe. This past October brought word that Stargirl season 3 would be the last for the show, though the creatives may have a plan to work around that for the future.

While appearing on an upcoming episode of The Wayne Ayers Podcast, out November 16, Brec Bassinger revealed that Stargirl's season 3 finale was shot with two different endings. The series lead said that, with so many changes at The CW and Warner Bros. Discovery, Stargirl showrunner Geoff Johns decided to shoot two alternate endings to make the possible cancelation palatable to fans, not wanting ambiguity and something unfinished to fill the air around the show's conclusion. The original ending for Stargirl, which was meant to end on an ambiguous note, with a cliffhanger, might wind up on a DVD set. Read what Bassinger had to say about the alternate endings and sudden conclusion of Stargirl below:

"It will make people sad because the fourth-season idea was insane. Like, it would have been epic. And I actually believe that’s why it took so long for us to officially get the cancelation news. Because Geoff came in with such a wonderful idea … But it wasn’t meant to be."

What is Stargirl's Best Possible Ending?

Brec Bassinger as Stargirl in CW DC Show

The last season saw darkness looming over the fates of the show's characters. The end of Stargirl season 3, episode 10, "Chapter Ten: The Killer" was appropriately named and saw the deaths of The Crocks, as Jordan Mahkent freezes and destroys their frozen bodies. While a heartfelt moment was shared between Crusher and Paula, the two are brazenly decimated. If Johns ends on a definitive and darker note, this could see Jordan Mahkent causing more havoc and being the reckoning of Stargirl and co.

With audiences still reeling from the Jordan reveal in the latest Stargirl season 3 episode, one can only hope that one of the multiple endings shot for the series finale pays this off in satisfying fashion. Given the show was nearly set to conclude on a major cliffhanger, it seems likely that Stargirl and her JSA will successfully defeat their foe come the end of the series, an unfortunate by-product of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. Though with the cast and crew clearly eager to return at some point in the future, it will be interesting to see if even the most minor of plot threads are left open for a potential Stargirl revival in the future.

Though the show's premature cancelation is sure to leave some disappointed, Bassinger and her Stargirl showrunner's desire to conclude the show on a solid note is sure to come as a soothing one for fans of the series. Whether this is the right ending for the show or not, it wouldn't be the best ending possible. As the soon-to-be-former Arrowverse actor said, the ending Stargirl gets come December is one that wasn't meant to be.
