Stargirl delivers Green Lantern answers the Arrowverse has failed to do with John Diggle. For years, Arrow subtly suggested Diggle’s destiny was to become the Green Lantern. During the series finale, he opened a box that revealed a bright green light that heavily implied the Green Lantern ring was within and Diggle’s next adventure was on the horizon. However, Stargirl has executed the Green Lantern story far better so far.

In Stargirl season 2, Jennie (aka, Jade), the daughter of Alan Scott’s Green Lantern, was introduced. In the season’s second episode, Jennie even trained with her powers while wearing her father’s Green Lantern ring. For fans of the Green Lantern, Stargirl was the first true showcase for the famous space ring in the Arrowverse. Jennie was shown to be able to create objects using the ring, as well as controlling the green lantern itself as it reacted to her emotions. While she left at the end of the episode, there is a promise that she will return to resume her training and to fully become the Green Lantern, joining the Justice Society of America in an official capacity.

Rather than tease Green Lantern, Stargirl actually provided answers about the superhero mystery it initially hinted at in the season 2 premiere. Such has not been the case at all with Diggle, who has dropped in on several of the Arrowverse shows this year — The Flash, Superman & Lois, Batwoman — with barely a mention of what happened after he found the box that contained the mysterious green light. Diggle revealed he’s been experiencing headaches and they seem to have gotten worse, but the Arrowverse seems to be trolling fans about the possibility of him becoming Green Lantern instead of offering any concrete answers following the setup in the Arrow series finale.

At this point, it’s very unclear as to whether Diggle will ever fulfill that role or if it was something other than the Green Lantern ring he found in the elusive space box. However, whatever the outcome of his potential Green Lantern future (Diggle still has one appearance left to go with Supergirl), it won’t be as satisfying as Stargirl’s immediate introduction to the new Green Lantern and revelations regarding the powers of the ring and lantern. What’s more, Stargirl will likely delve deeper into Green Lantern’s past as the series is expected to have a flashback episode in season 2. Whereas Diggle’s appearances throughout the Arrowverse have so far yielded nothing more than empty promises, Stargirl has shown fans how it’s done with regards to providing backstory and a satisfactory new take on a classic hero through Alan Scott’s daughter.

There may have certainly been clues planted throughout Arrow and the rest of the Arrowverse shows with regards to Diggle’s potential turn as the Green Lantern (most especially this year), but his transformation into that particular superhero is starting to get farther away as time goes on. For those who want to see Green Lantern stories develop and flourish, Stargirl is certainly delivering on that front where Diggle’s Arrowverse storyline has been sorely lacking.
