The CW has picked up the Brec Bassinger-led adaptation of DC's Stargirl for season 3 months ahead of its season 2 premiere on the network. Created by Geoff Johns, the series is centered around the DC Comics character, Courtney Whitmore (Bassinger), and follows the titular superheroine as she balances high school with inspiring a new generation of heroes, forming a new Justice Society of America. The cast for the series also includes Luke Wilson, Cameron Gellman, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington and more.

The series was first announced in July 2018 when new streaming platform DC Universe picked it up for a 13-episode season with Geoff Johns writing, co-showrunning and executive producing alongside Arrowverse head, Greg Berlanti. After a successful first outing, it was renewed for season 2 at The CW while the streaming platform shifted to solely becoming a digital comics subscription service and other programs shifted to HBO Max. The only series not to survive the shift was Swamp Thing, which was canceled after one season, though the door has been left open for it to possibly return in various Arrowverse series.

The renewal of Stargirl comes three months ahead of its season 2 premiere on the network, with The CW's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mark Pedowitz, noting in a statement they have been moved by the success the show has seen since its premiere. Alongside the DC series, The CW also delivered a season 2 renewal to its reboot of the hit martial arts drama, Kung Fu, just a month after its premiere. Both projects have been praised by fans and Pedowitz for their diverse storytelling and female-fronted casts. Read Pedowitz's statement below:

We are beyond proud to continue to share the stories of Nicky Shen and Courtney Whitmore, two strong, powerful young women at the center of this new generation of hit shows for The CW in Kung Fu and DC's Stargirl. While each boasts remarkable talent on both sides of the camera, Kung Fu and DC's Stargirl have not only treated fans to some visually stunning action and high-flying heroics, but they also both strike very powerful emotional chords as they delve into the family dynamics and personal relationships at their core, and we are so excited to see what happens next.

Exciting for fans as the news is, it shouldn't come as too much of a shock given the network's track record with its series in the realm of DC Comics. Next year will mark the tenth anniversary of its ongoing Arrowverse and with Arrow, Supergirl and Black Lightning all coming to a close with their current seasons, the network will need to keep its roster bolstered if it hopes to maintain a grip in the small-screen world of superheroes. As Ava DuVernay's Naomi is looking all the more likely to be ordered to series any day now and DC's Stargirl having recently been established as existing on a parallel Earth to the Arrowverse, its renewal ensures The CW's world of comics-based storytelling will continue to grow and evolve in intriguing new directions.
