Disney+ premiered Julia Hart's new film, Stargirl, based on the 2000 novel by Jerry Spinelli, and American musician Grace VanderWaal stars in the titular role. A possible Stargirl 2 may be greenlighted, so here is what to expect from a sequel.

In the Disney+ adaptation, Arizona teenager Leo Borlock (Graham Verchere) narrates the story and recalls the moment when he first met Susan Caraway a.k.a. Stargirl. Together, they navigate among the popular crowd at Mica High but view themselves as outsiders, with Stargirl being significantly more non-conformist than her shy friend. When Leo and Stargirl begin spending more time together, the other students take note and passive-aggressively confront the couple. Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) co-stars in Stargirl, along with Darby Stanchfield (Scandal).

During Stargirl's final act, Leo realizes that his girlfriend can't be anybody except herself. She won't conform, nor will she go by Susan, or at least she doesn't want to. And so the questions remains as to whether Stargirl will stay committed to Leo or if she'll begin a new adventure elsewhere - maybe in Mica, maybe in an entirely different state. Here's everything we know about Stargirl 2 on Disney+.

Love, Stargirl Is A Sequel Book To Stargirl

In 2007, Knopf Books published Spinelli's Stargirl follow-up: Love, Stargirl. So the story has indeed been written and Disney would theoretically work from this source material that's essentially about "the world's longest letter," as Stargirl reports her adventures to Leo. But since critics have been lukewarm about the Disney+ adaptation, there's a possibility that screenwriters Kristin Hahn, Jordan Horowitz, and Julia Hart may not be re-hired. Instead, Disney may choose someone else to provide a little more depth, as Screen Rant's own Molly Freeman described Stargirl as having "Manic Pixie Dream Girl Syndrome" in her review of the film.

Stargirl 2 Hasn't Been Greenlit By Disney+ Yet

As of now, Disney+ hasn't even ordered Stargirl 2, which isn't a huge surprise since the original film just released, and the audience is much different than a TV series like The Mandalorian. Executives will certainly take into account all the negative critic reviews, but it will be Stargirl's streaming numbers that ultimately determine if a sequel will be produced. Expect Disney to assess numbers over the coming weeks, and possibly months, before making a decision. Stargirl 2 greenlight might come in 2020, potentially before the summer begins.

Stargirl 2 Release Date Prediction

If Disney+ orders Stargirl 2 in 2020 (they may take the entire year to decide), then pre-production, filming, and post-production would probably take place in 2021. However, since both VanderWaal and Verchere are teenagers, Disney may indeed choose to shoot the sequel rather quickly as Love, Stargirl takes place not long after the events of the original story. On that schedule, Stargirl 2 will theoretically release in 2022. But the filmmakers may choose to tweak the story for a more mature audience - in that case, Stargirl 2 would probably premiere in 2023.

Love, Stargirl Story Details

Graham Verchere and Grace VanderWaal in Stargirl

If Disney+ is faithful to the source material, Stargirl 2 will be set in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. The female protagonist writes a long, long letter to Leo, all the while realizing that she has feelings for a local boy named Perry Delloplane. Much of the plot centers on Stargirl's relationships with the townspeople in her new home, including Dootsie, a six-year-old child, and Betty Lou, an elderly woman who doesn't leave her home. Despite Stargirl's kind demeanor, she's been criticized for her behavior at times, evidenced by a dramatic confrontation with fellow Mica High students in Disney+ film.

Stargirl 2 would heavily focus on VanderWaal's character, of course, but Disney may also include a subplot involving Verchere's Leo. Right now, though, fans probably want to know who will play Stargirl's new love interest, Perry, and whether there will be a third installment in the novel series. As for the movie franchise, however, Disney+ still needs to greenlight a sequel to Stargirl.
