MGM and digital strategy game publisher Slitherine have announced Stargate: Timekeepers, the first-ever strategy PC game based on the popular television series Stargate SG-1. Over its 25 years in existence, the Stargate franchise has produced three films, three live-action TV series, an animated series, and a web series.

Numerous Stargate graphic novels, games, and other media have also been produced over the years to feed the imaginations of sci-lovers across the world, and now one more game is finally on the way. The first Stargate game was a simple, in-name-only movie tie-in puzzle game for the Game Boy in 1994, while the most recent game to originate from the beloved series was 2013's Stargate SG-1: Unleashed, an episodic adventure game for mobile devices.

According to a press release, Stargate: Timekeepers follows an original story after the conclusion of season 7 of Stargate SG-1. The game will begin during the Battle of Antarctica, where Commander Eva McCain and her crew must support SG-1 against the Anubis fleet. During the game, players will travel through time and space, taking up various tasks like saving civilians, rescuing allies from danger, and dealing with despotic system lords - everything one would expect from the Stargate franchise.

The studio developing Stargate: Timekeepers is Creative Forge, an independent studio in Warsaw, Poland. Creative Forge is the makers of strategy game Ancient Space and turn-based games Phantom Doctrine and Hard West, both of which toy with strategy elements. Creative Forge's website lists titles like Gladiators Manager, I Saw The Night, and more as also currently being in development, so its newfound Stargate title is but one of several it's working on.

While the news should excite fans of the Stargate franchise, the project remains in the early stages of development and could be several years from completion. The reaction to the involvement of Slitherine studios will depend on how gamers rate the publisher's vast catalog of titles. However, publisher Slitherine's previous involvement with the well-received Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, hopefully means Stargate: Timekeepers is in good hands.
