Stargate's television show co-creator gives a disappointing update on a possible new series. The science fiction show, based on the original 1994 Stargate film, ran for 10 years between 1997 and 2007. Co-created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, Stargate-SG 1 serves as a continuation of the movie. Released by Metro Goldwyn Mayer, the Stargate film grossed $197 million worldwide, spawning a multimedia franchise. Starring Kurt Russell, the military space film centers around the discovery of the "stargate," an ancient ring-shaped device that allows communication across space and time throughout the universe.

Taking place about 1 year after the events of Stargate, the series, Stargate SG-1, debuted on Showtime before switching platforms to the Sci-Fi Channel in 2002. Stargate SG-1 starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Don S. Davis, chronicling the SG, an elite United States Air Force special operations team. The series centers around the team after they discover the stargate and use it to protect Earth from various threats in space including the Goa'uld, the Replicators, and the Ori. Nominated for 7 Emmy Awards, the show was a ratings success and has garnered a loyal fanbase throughout its years on-air, resulting in numerous other television shows including Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Infinity, Stargate Universe, and Stargate Origins. The direct-to-DVD films also continued the series storyline with Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. While whispers of a possible Stargate SG-1 reboot have floated around in recent years, co-creator Wright now has set the record straight on the possible return of the series.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Stargate SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright reveals a disappointing update on a potential new series. Wright shares that although a news series was in the works with MGM in 2020, the COVID-19 Pandemic put it to a halt, and has since been put on the back burner.

Could A Stargate Revival Happen In The Future?

Stargate revival

While a revival is not in development at the moment, this does not necessarily mean there is no future for Stargate. As Amazon acquired the rights to the franchise during an $8.5 million deal with MGM, it's clear the streaming conglomerate is interested in the franchise. Seeing their success with the recent revival of the Lord of the Rings franchise with The Rings Of Power television series, it's clear Amazon is willing to take the risk to tackle decades-old franchises and bring them back to life. However, it seems their attention is elsewhere for now considering Wright's response.

Luckily, stars Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping have both visibly expressed their interest in returning for a Stargate revival. While the attempted continuation of the series with the Stargate Universe TV shows never reached the same success as the original, it's possible a streaming option would work much better for the series in today's environment. However, Wright reveals the creatives behind the reboot have changed due to MGM's deal with Amazon. Whether Wright or Glassner return to work on a possible revival would have implications for the series' success, considering the pair have been with it since the beginning. Hopefully, the two are invited back, and as time passes, there is more interest in Stargate. As of right now, all viewers can do is be vocal about their interest and hope for the best.
