Although Stardew Valley is a game where players can essentially do whatever they want with their time, players who want to complete quests or try to get to 100% on the game may find all the various objectives and options to be overwhelming. This is especially true towards the beginning of a playthrough when players have to work on building up their farm from almost nothing.

But, there are ways to make things easier. While there is always going to be some level of difficulty, there are tricks to finishing quests and possibly reaching 100% Perfection.

Regularly Check The Quest Journal

A journal entry in Stardew Valley

This may seem like an obvious thing at first, but it is very easy for players to forget to look at the Quest Journal. With all the activities the player has to keep track of during a playthrough, it is easy to forget to do some of the quests.

In order to avoid completely forgetting about quests, the player should make it a habit to revisit the Quest Journal every once in a while - even if there is no new notification telling them there is a side quest. One way to do this is to look at it at the same time in every in-game day.

Simultaneously Work On Several Quests

Instead of only working on one quest at a time, the player should combine quests together to make the whole process easier. For example, at the start of the game, the player must successfully harvest some crops in order to complete one of the first quests. Along with some tools, the player receives some parsnip seeds for free to plant these first crops.

But, the player should also go to Pierre's General Store and buy a bunch of parsnip seeds and plant those too because parsnips can be used for multiple early quests. One parsnip is needed for the Spring Crops Bundle in the Community Center, and five gold quality parsnips can be used to complete the quality crops bundle. Also, some villagers like parsnips as a gift and can be used in certain dishes. With the Stardew Valley creators also adding some new farming mechanics to the game, this one should be fairly easy to complete.

Check Before Selling Anything

One of the first things a player should craft is a wooden chest so that the player can store some of their crops, items and resources. While it may be tempting to just sell everything the player cannot carry, especially early in a playthrough since funds are low, it is best for the player to check what they have and possibly store their items first. This is because many items are needed in quests, so it is good to keep a few spares in chests in case they are needed.

Even if an item is not necessary at the moment, future quests may require the item. If the player had already sold the item, then the player will now have to spend extra time getting those items again instead of focusing on new things.

Save Money

With all the various options and activities in the game, it may be easy for players to spend all their money all the time. While this is not necessarily a problem, later on in a playthrough, when players have a big farm that constantly supplies plenty of money every day, players need to be frugal with their money in order to get what they need when they need it.

If a player spends all their money immediately, they may not have the necessary funds when a quest arrives or to get a certain crop, resource or item before the end of a season. Although the lack of a true time limit means that missing an opportunity to finish something is not the end of the world, it may be annoying to wait and it will be harder to finish things before the original two year time limit is finished.

Finish The Mines As Soon As Possible

On the fifth day of Spring in year one, the player finally gains access to The Mines. Even though the focus of Stardew Valley is the farm, players should start working towards the bottom of The Mines as soon as possible. While working through the various floors, the player will quickly level up on their mining and combat skills, which is helpful for future quests.

Also, the player can get plenty of items in the mines that are needed for various quests. Some of these items can basically only be obtained in The Mines, and some can lead to some Stardew Valley mysteries that are necessary for full completion.

Prioritize The Community Center

During the early part of playthroughs, players should focus on finishing bundles in the Community Center above all other activities and objectives. This is because finishing bundles unlocks other areas, items and farm buildings in the game that are necessary for completing quests.

Some of these unlockables make certain quests much easier in the long run. For example, while most items can be found in multiple places, some items are easier to obtain in the player gains access to the unlocked things provided by the Community Center.

Make Friends

One of the main gameplay mechanics in Stardew Valley is becoming friends with the villagers, which is mostly done by giving gifts, completing quests and answering dialogue choices correctly. Although some players may work on raising friendship with certain villagers because they like them, players should actually try to raise their friendship status with all the villagers.

When the players have a higher relationship level, they get free items in the mail, which can be useful for quests. Instead of the player having to get the items themselves, the player can have some help from the villagers. This can make even some of Stardew Valley quests easier.

Marriage

While marriage is a fun mechanic and is a main reason why some players pick up this game, it can also be useful in completing quests. When a player gets a spouse, they get some benefits that single players do not have.

One benefit is that the spouse sometimes does some chores for the player, which includes watering crops or feeding the animals. This can give a player more time in the day to do other things. Also, the spouse sometimes gives the player items, which can be used for quests.

Check The Traveling Merchant

There are plenty of things the player can do in Stardew Valley's Secret Woods. However, one of the most interesting things is meeting the Traveling Merchant. On Fridays and Sundays, the Traveling Merchant appears in Cindersap Forest right next to the entrance to the Secret Woods. This Traveling Merchant is useful because each time they appear, they have different items in stock. Some of these items can even be items that the player normally cannot get during that season.

With the help of the Traveling Merchant, the player can easily complete most of the Community Center in the first year, which makes finishing quests easier. Also, the player can use items from the Traveling Merchant to complete quests themselves.

Quickly Unlock The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse as seen in Stardew-Valley

Once the player unlocks The Greenhouse on the farm after completing all the pantry bundles, the game becomes considerably easier. Since The Greenhouse is not affected by weather or seasons, all crops can be planted and harvested all year long. If the player has enough sprinklers, the player can just walk in every morning and harvest a bunch of crops, which can then be used in various recipes, crafts or just for more money.

Unlocking The Greenhouse should be one of the player's first goals because the monetary value is extreme. With this new building, the player can quickly become rich and get all the crops they need, which is all helpful for completing quests.
