Warning: SPOILERS for Yoda #1

In the Star Wars Universe, Jedi Master Yoda is considered to be one of the most powerful and wisest Jedi who ever lived...but the franchise recently revealed even he was capable of making a terrible mistake that ultimately doomed the Jedi Order. Yoda's feats and accomplishments on the prestigious Jedi Council are many, and his incredibly long lifespan has allowed him to learn from experience in a way that few people could even hope to match. But Yoda #1 reveals the Jedi is far more selfish than anyone realized.

Introduced in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda was a welcome addition to the franchise and one of the most enduring characters to fans. The diminutive green Jedi embodied a classic fantasy trope: that of the old, wise master who uses odd techniques to teach lessons to headstrong students. During the prequel era, Yoda demonstrated his lethal skills with a lightsaber, though he appeared to regret resorting to violence, even as a necessary solution. But Yoda was not without his flaws, especially regarding the Jedi Council.

In Yoda #1, written by Cavan Scott with art by Nico Leon, the Jedi Council intercepts an emergency transmission from a small, unimportant world: a village is under attack from bandits and requests assistance. Yoda cuts through the Council's unending debate by announcing he will go to take care of the matter. Before anyone else can object, Yoda departs - and after making short work of the bandits, Yoda elects to stay on the planet "as long as it takes" for the village to be free of the threat. Unfortunately, Yoda never should have left Courscant and the Jedi Temple.

Yoda Left The Jedi Council Because He Was Selfish

Yoda leaves the Jedi Council

Yoda is determined to act, rather than decide who acts, where and why. Despite his appearance, pre-Empire Yoda would rather journey to a strange world and negotiate in person rather than dictate policy from afar. Unfortunately, when Yoda left the Jedi Council, he took his wisdom with him. It can be inferred that this exact situation happened during the Clone Wars; with Yoda in the field more often than in the Jedi Temple, younger Jedi would make rash and unwise decisions (which would, in all likelihood, could have been influenced by Palpatine's manipulation).

Perhaps Yoda is frustrated with the Council's endless debating and bickering. All the more reason to stay; without Yoda to resolve disputes and point to the right course of action, the Council would flounder. It appears Yoda's desire to act rather than mediate and delegate played a significant role in the decay of the Council as a ruling body, and would eventually pave the way for the greatest Sith victory in Star Wars history.
