A new piece of Star Wars fan art shows what Yoda’s anatomy might look like. As one of the most iconic characters in a galaxy far, far away, Yoda (voiced by Frank Oz) was first introduced when Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) went to Dagobah in search of a legendary Jedi Master on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back. What he found was Yoda, a charming frog-like creature with an unusual (and eternally quotable) syntax. Epitomizing the idiom, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” Yoda has proven a fixture of Star Wars thanks to his formidable wisdom and relationship with the Force.

Yoda was 900 years old at the time of his death in Return of the Jedi. Following his role in the original trilogy, Yoda went on to play a pivotal role in the prequels as the most respected member of the Jedi Council. Despite permeating the Skywalker Saga, all that is known about Yoda is that he is ancient and powerful—details of his species, culture, and biology remain an enigma. While theories have suggested that Yoda’s species may have some connection to the Ancient Order of the Whills, this has been debunked by George Lucas. Yoda and his unspecified species remain one of Star Wars’ greatest mysteries.

Digital artist Scadarts recently posted some art to Instagram, which some may find disturbing and others enlightening. The piece imagines what Yoda, and in turn, his species’ skeleton might look like. Check it out below:

Yoda’s species has inspired other characters in live-action: Yaddle, a female member of the species who appearing The Phantom Menace, and The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda Aka Grogu. The latter character has only exacerbated the fandom’s obsession with Yoda’s mysterious species. Despite looking and acting like a toddler, Grogu is said to be around 50 years old in the Disney+ series. On top of that, he exhibits immense Force powers unseen in other children—which prompts remnants of the Empire to pursue Grogu ad nauseam for the sake of experimentation. Given their long infancy, it makes sense that untrained, vulnerable members of Yoda’s species would want to remain hidden.

Thankfully for Grogu, Luke Skywalker himself shows up in The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale to train and protect him. This may have disappointed fans who hoped to see/learn more of Yoda’s species. Given Grogu's ongoing popularity - and profitability – it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the last of him. Given Luke’s proclivity for communicating with Force ghosts as well as the myriad of other Star Wars projects on the horizon, Yoda may even show up at some point and reveal tidbits about Grogu and their species. Some of Yoda’s backstory is already getting filled in through The High Republic. However, that literary series will likely leave the biggest reveals for live-action. For now, fans can bask in Scadarts’ ambitious depiction of the most mysterious anatomy in the galaxy.
