What's Wes Anderson's Next Movie?

Ralph Fiennes and Wes Anderson in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Shortly after releasing his 2021 anthology comedy-drama film, The French Dispatch, Anderson began production on his latest project, Asteroid City. Set in 1955, the film will center on a fictional town in an American desert that hosts a Junior Stargazer convention. Students, parents, and teachers from all over the country gather at the event, leading to conflict, comedy, drama, and romance.

Anderson's new movie is set to have the largest ensemble cast of his past films. Tilda Swinton was the first actor attached to the cast, followed by Adrien Brody, Jeff Goldblum, Bryan Cranston, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Tony Revolori, Steve Carell, Maya Hawke, Margot Robbie, Sophia Lillis, and Jason Schwartzman, among many others. Cranston recalled the work as "detailed" and "specific" but also "familial" due to the number of actors contained in one five-star hotel in Spain. Asteroid City's distribution studio, Focus Features, described the film as "a poetic meditation on the meaning of life."

For over two-and-a-half decades, Anderson has delivered unique films in various genres that carry his distinctive aesthetic while still feeling like a new experience. From Rushmore to the stop-motion animated Fantastic Mr. Fox to The French Dispatch, Anderson shows no signs of his creative vigor diminishing. Perhaps with a bit of coaxing, the director can lend his flair to Star Wars to give it an artistic touch that is relatively absent in the billion-dollar franchise. With a June 16, 2023 release date set for Asteroid City, audiences do not have to wait much longer to experience the director's eccentricities again.
