The future of Star Wars’ film universe is now (even more) unclear after the cancellation of Game of Thrones creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss’ trilogy, making fans wonder what Star Wars movies are happening now after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The Star Wars saga as fans now know it began back in 1977 with A New Hope, followed by two more movies. Then, Star Wars continued its expansion in 1999 with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, the first entry in the prequel trilogy.

The Star Wars prequel movies offered some backstory for some characters and events, mostly Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, who was the main focus of the trilogy. Following the acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, Disney started working on a sequel trilogy that began in 2015 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and which is set to end with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The studio had already announced plans to continue with the Star Wars universe separate from the Skywalker saga, but it has all changed now that Benioff and Weiss are out.

Back in February, 2018, it was revealed that a new Star Wars series was in development with Benioff & Weiss attached as writers and producers. However, a lot has happened since then, including the fact that they have been heavily criticized for their work on the final season of Game of Thrones. Benioff & Weiss are officially out, so what movies are still in development?

Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Is Still In The Works

There haven’t been any substantial updates on Rian Johnson’s trilogy - which he will write in addition to directing the first installment - and he recently seemed unsure if his Star Wars movies were still happening at all. He said Lucasfilm is in the process of “figuring out what they’re doing” and that he would be thrilled if it happens, thus suggesting that the trilogy’s future is uncertain. After all, The Last Jedi became one of the most divisive movies of the decade. Officially, Johnson's trilogy is still in the works, seeing as there hasn't been any update on them in nearly two years from him or Lucasfilm.

Kevin Feige Is Working On A Star Wars Movie

Kevin Feige Star Wars SR

In September 2019, it was announced that Kevin Feige will develop a new Star Wars movie, also separate from the Skywalker saga - but just as the rest of the post-Skywalker projects, it’s not completely official yet. Feige is working on the movie alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

At the moment, Benioff & Weiss’ departure has left three release dates open (2022, 2024, and 2026) with no projects to fill them. The future of the Star Wars universe after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is uncertain, and it will depend on many factors, including how well this final movie performs. Until Disney makes up its mind and formally announces their future Star Wars projects, fans can get their fix with Disney+’s series The Mandalorian and, of course, by rewatching the previous entries from the Skywalker saga.
